There is no matter of greater political concern to the people of South Carolina than the election of United States Senator to succeed Patterson. Heretofore our great interest lay within our own borders: dangers threatened in upon every hand, indeed (he political life of our State rented poised in the balance and no man could tell what a day, even an hour might bring forth. Such a crisis and such eirenm stances demanded the best judgment, tin: firmest nerve ami the highest order of talent to be found among our people. Gen. Wade Hampton entile foitli the man for the occa sion. As Governor be has directed the ship of State safely through n stormy Pea and tu day lind-bet riding [proudf and securely in smooth wan r. The next greatest concern involves our relationship with the United State; govern* meat- In the halls of Congress, during the next two years, the great battle is to be fought out of the issue of ?\hieh i.~ to come 1 he future destiny of tlie South, tin the Republican side will 1><- arrayed their In??! leaders burning with a bitter?a religious hatred of the South, and especially of South Carolin, who will make evcy ell ort ! to regain the power they have lost, and ' once gained, the struggles and sucecsaes for ' the past two years go for nothing. The Northern Democracy sees the position and will, wc hope hot wisely by preparing to meet the issues. The .South is tba more deeply concerned and every sense of duty demands her best talent lu defend and vin - dicate her rights in the counsil of the na tion. Smith Carolina can -end upno nobler contribution than (ten. Hampton, whose intellect is more than a match for Hliiine I and the magic of whose presence is worth j a dozen first-class Senators. If Governor Hampton will p.cccpt the position we need him nowhere more than in the United Steles Senate. LEGSILATURE. The general desire pervad ing the members to expidite matters is very i cnirucndablc, and if the entire session be charnctcrized by the same del ige nee they will deserve the well-done of the people The judiciary Contmi ttec reported favor ably on Senator Gary's bill to disband the I'oiid Court.
