That “Presentment” “Since the notable document has been put fnrth—culled “Prcrentmcut of the Crand Jury for the County of Darlington"—sever al Democratic papers in the State have ta ken up the charges as facts (without waiting for investigationJ and makes condemnation, as usual with them. This matter is in the hands of the Courts and a fair hearing should first be given the Commissioners. We shsll have more to say about this precious Campaign Taper, and perhaps we too, may “unfold the curtain.” The Editor of the Southerner is the only apologist for the County Commissioners— and that too, immediately upon the close of a week devoted to a legal investigation of the frauds, peculations and villianies of those men—an investigation which established be yond a doubt, every charge contained in the Presentment, and so many others ofa grosser character, as to render those of the Grand Jury, comparatively insignificant, Comment is unnecessary. Pleasant Readlnsfor the Season. Next week w« will commence the publica tion of s series, entitled “Glimpses Behind GUT, 'the Lityvf.yo Smith, Gatmx, Lang, and Brown, arc “among the most prominent gentlemen in the place of my (his) residence.” WlUTTE.MORE is a convicted thief—con victed and sentenced by his peers, the mem bers of Congress, and he exhibits great good taste in selecting bis vindicators. There is honor among “theives.” These are just the men to publish in New York that ‘his (Whittemuhe's) private character and public virtues with us are unquestioned." If “Ho” refers to the signers of the paper it may be true—but Bkockknton once charged him with peculation and opposed him for the State Senate on the ground of his (Wiuttemork's) want of honesty, both public and private. If however “us” means the people, it is as arrant a lie as ever was published. The idea that Whittemore has either “private character” or “public virtue,” is simply ridiculous; and yet, leave out Brocki:mg.'j (colored) and he is but lit tle, if any worse than his endorsers. We would advise Wuittemoue, by all mcaus to get an endorsement from the in mates of “Sing Sing” Prison, to keep the one signed by Wright, Smith Gatlin Brown & Co., in countenance. In conclusion, we will venture the asser tion, that no honest man iu the First Con gressional District of South Carolina, could be induced to sign the paper, which Whit 'Tk fme man, its the Brown Curtain.” Wo trust these i TEMORE parades in New York, signed by “glimpses” will prove instructive to tax-pay ers and voter'j. The Marlon Crescent. The republication of this excellent paper has commenced. We greet it kindly and wi-h its proprietors success. The Crescent announces its purpose to support the nominees of the “Union I to form Party.” “the most prominent gentlemen of my place of residence.” An honest man could not sign it, with the “Sheppapd,’ letter uucon- tradicted—staring him in the face. The .Season Still continues favorable to the growing crop*. We may have had too much rain for cotton, but it suits corn, and corn is what wc need. The health of the county continues good. Victimized. We saw a creature in the uniform of a Yankee Lieutenant, in the Court House a few days before “the day we celebrate.” We don’t know who or what he was; but he was “true to his cloth’’—for we learn he borrow ed money from some of “the most prominent gentlemen” in the place and left withont saying good bye. As long as these rascals confine their pick ings to their own associates, it is all right; they only practice, that which Radicalism preaches. The following letter was freely read du ring the late Congressional campaign. t Boston, April 1G, 1870. T. C. Dunn, Esq., Little River, S. C: * * * I have had a long talk with W. F. Shaw, the man from whom Whittemore stole money. He was in Mr. Shaw's employ, and took the money at various times in stock, which he sold. His peculations extended over quite a space of time, and amounted in the aggregate to some 85000. This amount was ascertained, but whether mure was taken is not known. Shaw has a writing of Mr. Whittemore acknowledging the theft, and promising to restore the amount as soon as he can. Up to this time he has not paid any thing. Shaw is now quite friendly to Whit temore, and you will see it is for his interest to have him in Congress. ***** S. P. Sheppard, Of the firm ofMorse, Sheppard & Co., Dry Goods Merchants, Boston. We presume that Whitiemork is too busy to notice this little charge just now.— The public, very naturally, look for an ex planation to “those prominent gentlemen” who recently gave him such an excellent tes timonial as to ‘ public character” and “pri vate virtues.” (From the “Daily News"] Cats In Hie Meal Tub. Y e oco a great deal, now-a-days, about securing “Woman'ii right*.” In fact, Yan kee papers and flash noTcls, contain so much on this subject, that wc have been wonder ing, oflate, when and in what respects, the I “rights, privileges aud immuirties” of the ‘dear creatures” have been curtaded. Our sympathies have been excited, and we have desired, ifvjeccssity demtuded, to break a lance in the defonee of “ftod’s last, best gift to man.” But really, we can't fiud eause of quarrel with a»y one. that Congress has made the wegro peculiar pet; but then, in making him a lit tle hetfer than the. white mas, it has not elevated the negro- womna above her white .Wafer. So we find no cause of quarrel with Congress “in this behalf.” Her right to darn stockings, sew on bnt- tona, read novels, pet poodles, rock the cra dle 4c., is unimpaired. Her high prerogative to comfort the dis tressed, to minister to the siek, to confirm Uie doubting, to reclaim the wanderer, to lift up the fallen; has sot been abridged. Her peculiar privilege, to weep with the mourner, and rejoice with the jdyful; to do works of charity and love; to dispel the gathering gloom and span the sky of hope with the bow of promise—has not been in vaded. The true, woman is still respected, honored, loved and adored. In her place, occupying her proper sphere, discharging her legitimate duties and executing her al lotted functions—she is as supremo in power as she is lovely in person and character. Woman's kingdom is home, and—“Home is where the heart is.” Here she rules and governs for weal or woe—happiness or mise ry, must keep her company at. the fire side; and, in a vast majority of instances, she has choice of her companion. When we commenced, we merely intended to introduce to our'female friends, the follow ing extract from an old law. “Until the year 1770 the following enact ment was in force in England.—“Any person who shall, by means of rouge, or of blanc, of perfumes, of essences, of artificial teeth or false hiar, of cotton Kspagnol (whatever that my be,) of steel stay or hoops (the crino line of 1770.) of high-heeied shoe*, or offalse hips, entice ary of his Majesty’s inalesubjects into marriage, sh?.!! be prosecuted for sorcery and the marriage shall be declared null and void.” Old Bachelors. “We wonder why there are so many old Bachelors, prowling about in society, turning the milk of ba ppiness into the clabber of vex ation.
