THE E^-HLIlsTG-TOIiT EE jVC O G E. J±. T. Tott much this term imports. It tells us •iu only of a birth, but of a dtath. The old ■ isdead. Its records are etoroal. Pro- , >:■'.? wc could not devote a day more pro- . i'Vy than to spend one cnr|uiring How it un'th us? A year sener home. Some ...y say eo with joy : all must say so of v.-.sity. The death of the old year teach ^ on that we are mortal; the life of the New aty well admonish us, that wc shall again. There is no season better adapt- profitable rejecticn or for the formation •J resolutions, than the present. Let .-•a i?. in this way. * .-re as- a people, oppressed and down- ;U, Some seem to say, and actually ay. that God has forsaken us: given ub r to cruel and unrelenting enemies who :ik by calling themselves our country- :n; kept from us the early as wall as the after ram; blasted our hopes of harvest and added starvation to tyranny. Yr T hy, should we judge Him who ruleth among the nations of the earth. In His time He will teach us why these things hnve r -en. Let us trust Him, rely on Him and wait ou Him. YThat more must we do? Go earnestly to e rk; labor diligently; deal honestly, act faiily and trust faithfully in a good Father .vho delighted not in chastising his children. If we enter the New Year with such a spirit we may weli hope und confidently ex- ;et that our material prosperity will be in creased and /nunc that we will be spiritually exalted. I»o*t Offices. We find tho following in our exchanges uncreditcd. Wc can’t see why this step has been taken by Mr. Whittemork. Tho want of capacity and sometimes, the want of honesty on part of Post masters, of honesty have occasioned many letters of value to Ic forwarded by the route agents. We can’t see the indignity however. This necessity docs not not exist here, but we can will im agine why, at other places, the agent is pro" ferred to tho Post-master: Southern PosTorners-Colored Post masters-Actionsof Congressman Whit- lemore:—I n some places whore colored postmasters have been appointed, continued attempts are making to depreciate the busi ness of their offices by parties hostile to snch appointment. Such especially has been the case on .he line of the railroads where per sons could put their letters iu the postal car passing through, instead of dropping them at the offices. Congressman Wliittemore, who has been uonizaut of those petty indignities, has made use of means which will put a stop to tho practice. Route agents are to be in structed not to receive them and a special agent has been directed to come to the South aud correct such abuses.—Exchavge. Ail Iligbt. St. Jolinn Academy. This justly popular Institution will be sued on tho 10th lost. Those wishing to ..vii! themselves of its advantages will refer ’.he advertisment to its Principlal. (». A. Howard, Of Florence, is prepared to furnish uphol- i-zrj. aud repair furnitmre. See his adver- t^cment. Outrages. Ou the night of the 31st ult., Mr. Wm. v r i.vMN, and his little sitter, were return- hug home from Florence, upon entering the p:.to at his father’s residence, he was knock- down by some unknown fiend. The cries of bjg little sister brought assistance, and, undoubtedly saved his life. Ho was serious ly Injured. Gov. Scott will please take ru.tice. Tdr. Peter C. Cogsiiall’s kitchen, in vhich he had fifteen thousand pounds of seed cotton, was destroyed by fire siucc our '’ss issue. Last rear the Gin-house of this gentleman was burned. Roth acts of incen diaries. Gov. Scott will please notice. Messrs. Weinberg & Strauss’ store, at Florence, with the entire contents, were de stroyed by fire on the night of the 24th ult. Undoubtedly the act of incendiaries. Gov. Scott will please take notice. At the fire in Florence, above alluded to. Mr. J. H. Husband’s suffered severe loss. His work shops were destroyed, and it was only by the most strenuous efforts that his dwelling was saved. Gov. Scott will please nutieo. The following which we copy from the Jacksonville (Ala.) Republican, only con firms the generally expressed opinion—that the negro left to himself,, will return to idolatry, witch-craft and the like:— “On Thursday last, six negro wicn were committed to jail in this place, charged with having been engaged in an attack on tbe Saturday night previous a negro man named Frank Krabrey, who was shot in tho arm and side, and at the same time his wife shot dead, three shots having been fired. It ap pears from the evidence given in on the pre liminary trial, that Frank had become ob noxious to*a number of the negroes in tbe neighborhood from a supersticious belief that he was a sort of necromancer, and could at will fill them with pains, lizards, fee., that he could make a mark, aud if any woman crossed it, she would be poisoned. A week previous to the murder they attacked his house with rocks, and beat him severely with sticks, ordering him w leave the coun try. He having failed to do so, they re turned ou Saturday night, renewed the at tack, in which the three shots were fired with the result stated. No white man was in any way connected in the dfficulty." Impossible. with the beauties of reconstruction, it should certainly be no cause of grief to us. Let them fight it out among themselves. As regards any excitement prevailing on that score at tho North, wc regard it with unminglcd satisfaction. It is one of tho signs, among many, that tho Northern peo ple in conquering us for our.slavcs and our cotton, have invoked the furies of national anarchy on their own heads; that in destroy ing our liberties they have likewise de stroyed their own. The state of Ohio has repealed her ratification of the Amendment, but wo earnestly hope it will be fastened upon her in spite of herself, aud by means too of the bogus voter of the “reconstructed States” of the South, whose degradation Ohio has so warmly applauded. There are many sign in tho political sky to be seen, besides this matter of the Fif teenth Amendment, which may well cause the heart of a true Confederate to rejoice.— The time will certainly ccme when it will bo clear that our enemies are incapable of self- government. The Ship of State, whose helm they have so long guided, will then go to pieces among the breakers. The sooner the better! What honest decent Southern man or wo man can protend to have any respect for a government which is waning’upoii us to-day more fiercely and vindictively than when Lee led our legions. Does not Hubbard call for more mercenaries with arms in their hands? And does not Scott flood the State with Winchester rifles, to be used for his own purposes during the election of next fall ? Away, then, with anyaffectations coueern- ing our love for the so-called Yankee Re public. If it is by tho reputation of such a Republic that our liberties are to be rescued, Lee and Stonewall Jackson fought iu a false cause. Ifitwasajust and noble cause in which they fought, we Soutcrn people are false to it when we clap our hands in honor of the burlesque of a Republic which wc sec to-day. For our part, we shall be extremely happy whan we tec—as we expect to—the Northern people compelled, under che pressueoftyaan- ny to acknowledge with bowed beads that their war upon the South was an assassin- stab to the heart of tha Republic founded by Washington and his co-laborc^j j- (£J(itfUld Advertiser. part anf people, y-w• suggest! Its impossible for tho present gene ration of the South to love the Union: and if wo aontinne to live under such rule as we now endure, future generations will hato^c union if it bo possible) more than w' « “Love the Union.”-—The most Bern’ v charge brought agains' tbe Af outlkjrn peu by their northern enemies is “ hostile to the Union.” For 4 ' sake grant it—who makes them so ? No people ever yet gave such evidence of their willingness to go into the Union and become peaceable member of it—they have even humiliated themselves and surrendered every principle held dear by them in order to get there—why is it that they are not there and living in peace with the States of the North? Any honest man can see the reason plain enough- Tbe men who are continually abus ing us for “disloyalty to the Union odious to us. The very moment everything gets quiet and peaceable, aud spirit of fraternity ap pears, these marplots get up some new villainy to arritate and inflame our people towards the Govertmeut, and what is more, for the express purpose of making us hate them and keeping the Union in a state os disruption. Should tlie poor Southern worms turn when thus trodden upon, we hear a fresh cry of “disloyalty” and ‘ hostility to the Union.” This is hypocrisy and cowardice combined.
