Of this num ber eleven are over eighty and one eighty-six. Most of them sleep at their desks a good part of the day. The Grand Army posts insist that these men ought to be retained because they arc old solders without regard to whether they earn their salaries or not. Some of them do earn their salaries and are excellent and efficient clerks; but . uch are few. It seems to be universallv assumed that these clerks have laid up no money, have saved nothing from their large salaries, and if dismissed would have to be supported by charity. Un happily,^ this is to a great extent true. The government clerk generally looks upon himself as a favorite of Providence, whose good luck is to last forever. So thousands of them spend every cent of their talaries and borrow money of sharpers at five per cent a month, and more. Whether these improvident per sons shall be supported indefini- teiy is a question which mainly concerns the tax-payers of the eountrv.
