He then read the letter. He
aaid V prefenrd to withhold
the name*. He added that V
knew the lady in question and
she was received into society
among her neighbors and was
really a good woman. Her baa
band bad died within the last
few weeks. Unless this aeetion
waa passed, the law would turn
the wife and cbildrn out of borne
and property and brand the in
fant aa a bastard He asked
the Convention would they do
oo. The question was put upon
the adoption of the aeetion. So
ono aaid a word and the recog
nition of divorces granted in
pUier States, which bad been so
bitterly fought a month ago,
was passed. A few members
voted‘no’ and not even a divis
ion was called for and so the
section was adopted.”
The letter wbich brought all
this about was from a lady who
had married a divorced man in
another State and afterwards
moved to South Carolina. She
begged that the Convention
would relieve her children of
the stigma placed upon them by
law as it stands at present,

Mr. Parrott ssid there
another county line within three
miles of his county seat. Seven
years ago be opposed the line
being so close to Darlington.
He was now glad to see the old
counties getting some protec
tion.
Mr. Burn said that when he
agreed to an eight mile limit be
understood that it was from the
corporate limits. Changing it
to the Court House would result
in gaining a mile in some cases.
