[Columbia Cor., News and Courler.l On entering the main building almost the first thing that meets the eye is the grand pyramid of the Darlington smoking tobac co. Think of a pyramid, four feet at the base, running up four feet high, of the different brands and sizes of this home industry. Nothing of the kind has ever been witnessed at our State Fair. Mr. Ira S. Burch, the general manager, is here distributing samples of their different brands and it is need- less to say he is quite busy. Mr. Simply bCCaUSC WC lift VC the STOCK 01 gOOClS presentative of the News and ftnd RT© SClllIIg th©m Rl th© Tight piTC©. Courier, as he remarked that the News and Courier had done a great deal in the interest of the Darlington tobacco, and said if all South Carolina peo pie took the same interest in this home industy the company wbuld in a few years be work ing 500 hands. Mr. Burch is from Durham, N. C., and under stands his business. He says that South Carolina tobacco makes a better smoke than the North Carolina and Virginia heavy tobacco does. The com pany has four brands on exhibi turn, namely: The Pride of Dar- lington and the Pearl of the Pile-Dee, their two best brands. They have quite a quantity of neatly gotten up cards with a true representation of the sack on fhem and description of the tdbhico therein. The “Palmet to fetkte” and the “Old Stand* by,” genuine South Carolina brands, are vividly displayed. They claim the genuine South CttMylmd brand is the best two ounce package for five cents on the market. Their exhibit is capped off with the natural leaf of lemon cigarette cutters, of which they make their “Prideof Darlington” and it almost makes a smoker's mouth water to look at it," it is just lovely. Mr. Burch says the Darlington leaf market is fine this year and prices for the bright weed are bringing fancy pricee. They hive sold up to this time two and a half million pounds and hope to sell by the end of the MMOB'flve million pounds. This industry has been a God send to the Pee-Dee section of South Carolina, and the farmers say they a,re not going to lay aside tobacco for eight-cent cot ton. So Cotton is king no long er in that section] Mr. Burch says he has traveflted all oVer the State selling his smoking tobacco; that the lands almost all over the State are adapted to She tobacco, and he predicts thkt tobacco will in the future be the moneyed crop of South Caroling This Darlington company is the first to utart the manufacture of the weed and all true South Caroliniansshould patronize it, as it is beyond a shadow of doubt that they sell just as good goods at the same monOy. They claim that their Pee-Dee brand cannot be dupli cated anywhere for the same money. Mr. Burch says ho has booty in the tobacco business for twenty-two years and fully un- derstands that his company has got to pat just as good an arti cle at the same if not a lesser E rica than the old brands that ave been on the market for years and thoroughly advertis ed. He says his company in tends, by push and perseve^ ance and putting up their to baccos uniform and keeping iti up to the standard, to succeed and make a business that. the. Pee-Dee section will be proud oft''The correspondent of the Nmws and Courier ie convinced of this fact, he says, by the many complimente be has heard paid these fine tobaccos. As k proof of the superiority of their tobacco they are duplicating or ders every day. Mr. Burch has taken a great many orders for tobacco to be shipped to differ ent parts of the State on his re turn from the Fair. He is a fine salesman and knows how to talk tobacco. He says he gives away no pipes or brass watches will these goods, but puts that amount in the quality of the stock. The News and Courier is glad to welcome such men to the State and predicts this enterprise will be a success. show tobacco, overh^ulfil and ty fit ted for thy ^onimydation ofour [ rons, we p-bpo*e to tife'Aijt in *ale*in !the oldest, most sulistiintiul regular'bright tobacco market in the worljl.'' * 1 ^ ] V, f , utir home manufacturers use more, than' 10,0O0,000 pouud. yearly.
