WILLFUL MISREPRESENTATION. We mentioned in our last is sue that Governor Tillman’s message had been sent to the Leg islature the previous day, but we were not able to make any com ment upon it, not having seen the full text of it As this was the last shot he was to fire during the four years of his two eventful terms, it was to be expected that thoGovernor'scrowning ef fort would be at least as unique as usual, and it is safe to say that, in this respect, public ex pectation was not disappointed. Gov. Tillman is a smart man, (taking the word in its strictest and most literal sense), and his message was a smart one He certainly understands thorough ly how to “put '.he best foot fore most,” and is auadept in theart of presenting a strong case from his own standpoint. Smartness, however, is about the only com mendable feature of this most remarkable paper. It certainly is not statesman-like: in fact, the Governor is too much of a crank to be anything of a states man. Who but a crank would devote more than half of his valuable space in an im portant document as this to the diseussion of one of his hob bies, and that hobby such a one as State controll of the liquor traffic? What real statesman, under similar circumstances, would accord the same dedree of prominence to that one ques tion as to all of the following combined: The achievments of the “Reform Movement, the re cent State election, the Consti tutional Convention, penal and charitable institutions, educa- tionalinsti tutious, besides a large number of important miscella neous matters concerning the welfare of the State? Glowing as the message is with egotism, and teeming with false and incorrect statements, it is open to criticism in almost every paragraph. With many of these statements we are not directly concerned, and there are others to correct them; but there is one class that we feel called upon to refute here and now, to wit, the Governor’s as sertions throughout concerning the dispensary troubles In Dar lington last April. He made some such assertions as these at the time that he sent the troops here: we could forgive him then, as the natural infer ence was that he had been mis- infermed, and that time would serve to correct his false impres sions. Blinded as he seems to be, however, by passion and prejudice, he has not even tak en the trouble to find out the truth. After a lapse of more than six months, he not only adheres to his first hastily form ed impressions, but in the most formal and solemn manner pos sible, embodying them as part and parcel of his annual message to the Genral Assembly, he pub lishes them to the world as liter al truths! Gov. Tillman himself says in his message: “It is said that the truth never overtakes a lie, and the injury done can never be undone.” Knowing this as well as he seems to know it, should he not, in the prepara tion of a paper that is to be as wide’y read as this is, be partic ularly careful in regard to his facts? If his proposition is true ordinarily speaking, with much greater force does it apply to a document like this—what can overtake a false statement con tained in a gubernatorial mes sage? Certainly not the cor rection made by a comparative ly obscure country newspaper. “Why then,” some may ask, “attempt to make the correct | ion—it can do no good?” Well, it may not do dny good as far as can be perceived at present, but we feel that in this matter ^ we have a duty to perform. The editor of the only paper pub lished in Darlington, and pos sessing a thorough knowedge of the events connected with the April “insuriection,” on whom does it more fittingly devolve to put on record an emphatic denial of Gov. Tillman’s false statements—to prevent his in correct history of the affairgoing unchallenged, even though, per chance, the challenge is neyer heard of outside of the borders of Darlington County? We are aware of the fact that Gov. Tillman’s prosperity is too great for him to be reached by any shaft we may direct against him. We realize that any criticism we may make of his conduct only serves to strength en him with his admirers. We have not forgotten our express- el determination to abstain from discussing in these col umns the circumstances leading up to the deplorable tragedy en acted here last April, to “let by gones be by-gones”, to do all in our power to restore peace and harmony in the State. But,situat ed as we are, believing as we do that the duty of speaking out at this juncture in no uncertain tones devolves upon us, we feel that we would be recreant to that duty if we stood quietly by and admitted, by our very silence, the truth of Gov. Tillman’s as sertions. Our people may not have been entirely without fault throughout this matter, and we have never contended that they were, they would not have been human had they been: but how great is the hu miliation of having our conduct j colored and distorted out of all recognition, and then held up to the world in an effort to bring disgrace upon us! And that, too, by the Governor of the State himself, the head of the Commonwealth, he who is supposed to be the humane ruler and kindly protector of the peo ple! Thanks to the character of those who comprise this com munity, Darlington will survive his vituperation and slander, his abuse of power and shame ful tyranny, and will live for great deeds in the future his tory of the State, long after the name and fame of B. R. Till man have taken the place in that history to which they pro perly belong!
