$he garliufllcn w-. WADDY THOMPSON, Editor.' Thursday, Dec. 21,1893. HAMPTON'S LETTER. We publish in full in this is sue a letter from Hon. Wade Hampton to Messrs W. D. Evans and J. Wm. Stokes, two prom inent Alliancemen. The letter was brought about in this way. A month or so ago a communi cation from Governor Hampton in regard to the organization of Democratic clubs throughout the Stote was published in the South Carolina papers. In this communication GovernorHamp ton said, “No man who upholds the Ocala platform can properly claim to be a Democrat,’’ To this Messrs Evans and Stokes took exception and wrote an open letter to Governor Hamp- t o n asking him to indicate wherein the Ocala platform is undemocratic. Messrs. Evans and Stokes seem to have fallen into the er ror, so commonly made, of sup posing that opposition to the Ocala platform means a denun elation of ©very member pf the Alliance. They charge Govern or Hampton with taking this position, but the Governor re plies, “I have never charged that Alliancemen were not Dem ocrats, nor have I ever denoun ced the Farmers’ Alliance’’. We who, like the Governor, oppose the Ocala platform, can appre ciate his being put in this wrong position. Whenever anything is said in opposition to Ocalaism the leaders of that school twist it into an abuse of every member of the Alliance. This policy has been so diligently followed that we are constrained to believe that it has been de signedly adopted; that it is hoped that by arousing the pro judice of the members of the or der, the real questions at issue will be iost. The people who belong to the Alliance should understand that no abuse of them is intended. Governor Hampton’s plain and straightforward, but cour teous, letter makes it clear that he does not denounce Alliance men. He thinks, like we do, that there are many good Dem ocrats in the order, who will not desert the party nor will they be driven from it. But the leaders of the Alliance are en deavoring to carry the order where it does not belong. The doctrines embodied in Ocalaism are dangerous and we do not believe the rank and file of the Alliance will subscribe to them. We commend Hampton’s let ter to the many Alliancemen who are “true blue” Democrats They will find much in it to do them good. He shows that Ocalaism and Democracy are antagonistic ; so much so that one cannot consistently endorse both. In the Ocala demands some good measures are advo cated, but others are undemo cracy, unconstitutional or un feasible. Ocalaism savors of Populism and is no more Demo cratic than is Republicanism. Let Hampton’s letter be read carefully and dispassionately and we feel sure that the true Democrats of the Alliance will reach the conclusion that the sooner Ocalaism is stamped out the better. THE STATE LOSES AGAIN. The State has lost another law suit. Sometime ago Judge Simonton, of the United States Court, sentenced Swan, a State constable, to imprisonment in jail for contempt of court in seizing liquor in the keeping of the South Carolina Railway at its depot in Charleston. The State authorities, on behalf of Swan, appealed to the United States Supreme Court, but on Monday that tribunal sustained Judge Simonton. The consti tutionality of the dispensary law was not involved in the de cision, the Supreme Court mere- iy holding that Swan was guil ty of contempt because he acted without authority. But the de cision teaches a lesson. If the State continue to take upon it self to defend every unlawful act of a constable, much of the people’s money will be spent in useless law suits. UNA. The Caligraph is recognized everywhere as the most simple and most durable typewriter. It is easily learned, does beautiful work, and will last a decade, if properly cared for. In speed contests it has repeatedly taken first place and in telegraphic work has nevei been excelled. For manifold work it has no superior. With interchangable parts the Caligraph is well nigh indestructible.
