Kelley is here on a THE DISPENSARY FIGHT. The dispensary flfcht has reached a crisis; about this there can be no doubt. The war cannot be stopped now; whether wise or unwise, it must be pushed to a finish. Even if there were a desire on either side to back down, it would be impossible for matters have pro ceeded too far for anything like this Those who disapprove of the fight, and they are by no means confined to the members of the Tillman faction, have to submit to the inevitable and await the outcome jusf as those who approve of the fight have to do. Of course, on account of the many sensational turns the fight has taken, everybody is awaiting with eager curiosity further developments that the near future is sure to bring about. We are promised a sen sational trial for contempt to morrow and what will follow is a matter of great speculation to everybody. Indeed the ques tion has assumed so serious a shape and the legal complica tions have become so great that the mind of the average man is becoming more and more be wildered as he tries to keep up with each stage of the fight. Our advice to him is to do as we are doing, abide patiently the result. There is one thing upon which the advocates of the dispensary and its opponents agree. All, irrespective of their views on the question, wish a speedy end to it. When it is decided one way or the other peace will come and this is what every body wants Of course no one can predict with accuracy what the final decision will be, but it is generally believed that the dispensary will win. But what ever be the result let us have peace after the fight is ended, for wo can hardly expect it be fore then. • Mr. T. J. Price took a trip to Lake City last week. We had fine seasons the past week and all vegetation has put on a better appearance. Mrs. Jacobs, the mother of Mrs. W. L. Galloway, is spend ing a while at Mr. B. A. How ell’s. There is one of our young men who is very much stuck up; no thing strange, though, for he has been sojourning in the Tar Heel State. We have been reporting for The News a longtime and have now to chronicle the first in stance of theft in this section. Last week some unknown per son went into Mr. M. Marco’s millhouse and took a side of meat, the property of Mr. Rosier Kelley. Whoever the ,ellow may be he had best keep it a profound secret. A large number of our people went from this place to Red Springs, N. 0., on an excursion on Wednesday of last week, re turning the same day. They report a jolly time. The train did not stop at Syracuse and while some of our friends were left they would not be outdone. They took the regular passenger train and spent the day in Dar lington. The supposition is that the V. 8. & N will know when they go to Red Springs again. —i « — City, K&ns., on Thursday, the strikers were led by about one hundred women who fought sa hard as the men. An excursion train, carrying a large number of Sunday- school children, was wrecked at ■East Aurora, N. Y., on Wednes day night of last week and twenty people were injured. On Friday at Metropolis, III., Richard Shoemaker killed two men named Lukens, seriously wounded their father, and then committed suicide. All parties were of high social standing. Robert McMahon and Robert Caton became involved in a fight in Sevier county, Tenn., on Saturday. Eighteen pistol shots were exchanged. Caton roceived six wounds and was killed. Miss Frankie Jehnke, 1C years of age, was murdered and her body thrown into a creek near Ennis, Texas, on Wednes day of last week. Suspicion points to a negro as the perpe trator of the foul deed. The coroner’s jury, which in vestigated the recent fire at the World’s Fair which caused the death of sixteen persons, has fixed the blame upon several of ficials of the fair and the officers of the company which had the exhibit in the burned building. A race riot between Polish and Hungarian miners took place at Priceburg, Penn., on Friday. The combatants filled themselves with whiskey and took possession of the town. A reign of terror followed. Over thirty people were injured. THE TEACHERS’ ASSOCIATIONS. No association has been or ganized in Darlington county in recent years that can be made of more practical benefit to our people than the teachers’ associations, white and colored. Everyone interested in the great cause of education should give these associations a helping band. No greater benefit can be conferred upon the young than to give them thorough ed ucational training. The State has been very gen erous in the matter of higher institutions of learning. To white boys are given the South Carolina College, Clemson, and the Citadel. These institutions cannot be excelled and all who graduate from them receive a complete education. To the white girls the State will soon open the doors of an industrial college and there our sisters and daughters will get excellent training in practical knowledge. But in order for our youth to enter these higher institutions they must first be well ground ed in the elementary branches of education^ and this can only be done through our schools. Hence the importance of im proving them is readily seen. There is no better way to ele vate the schools than by the formation of teachers’ associa tions. The teachers are thus brought closely together, goodis derived from the free inter- changeof views and experiences, and interest in educational mat ters is increased. With the people generally and the teach ers in particular increasing their interest in the schools the result will be that the pupils will be given better advantages and greater incentives to learn. What is applicable to the white people is also applicable to the colored. Their children have Claflin University and Benedict Institute; now let _j them be thoroughly prepared for the higher education thus JllliP offered them. • CARTERSVILLE. The weather is quite warm. Miss Clara Bailey, of Florence, is visiting Mrs. E. P. Tolson of this place. TheBaptirt Sunday-school is preparing for “Children’s Day” which will be held in August. Mr. Boyd McLaughlin opened a large school at St. Paul on Monday last. He has over for ty pupils. Mr. Joseph Meyers, a young fa' Judge Norton has refused to interfere with the Greenville dispensary. He says that three sections of the act are unconsti tutional, but as he does not know whether this will effect the va lidity of the entire act, he gives the law the benefit of the doubt. i, -vf m and enterprising tarmer, diec his home near this place Thursday last. On Thursday last, during a thunder storm, lightning struck and instantly killed Stephen Wilson, colored, who lives on Martin Mims’s place, near town Robert Brown, colored, was with him at the time and was badly stunned by the same stroke. Thev were walking along the public road at the time the accident happened. GENERAL NEWS. Item* o' Interett From All Over The World. A tornado in Italy last week destroyed two towns and killed a number of people. A fire in London on Tuesday of last week destroyed $1,R00,- 000 worth of property. Col. C. 0. Jones, Jr., the dis tinguished historian of Georgia, died in Augusta last week. At Long Island City, N. Y., on Friday, $B00,000 worth of property was destroyed by fire. In a fire in Savannah on Fri day a colored woman and her two children were suffocated to death. It is conceded that the home rule bill will be defeated in the House of Lords by a vote of ten to one. Susanville, Cal., had a fire on Tuesday of last week which caused the destruction of 000 worth of property. David Laser, a New York drummer, killed Ban Levison with a shot /an in the latter’s store in St. Louis on Saturday. The Starr gang of outlaws, which has been giving so much trouble in the West, was cap tured in Indian Territory last week. Miss Bessie Stone, a young lady of Warrenton, Va., com mitted suicide on Friday bv shooting herself in the mouth with a pistol. A negro nr an, named Walker who has committed a number of crimes was. on Friday night, taken from the jail in the city of Memphis and lynched. B. E. Johnson, a leading young lawyer, was killed on the the streets of Kansas Citv, on Wednesday of last week, by A. W. Little, who is a prominent hanker. W. L. Oakley, of New York, walking from Man Francisco to New York on a wager, was run over and killed by a train near Omaha, Neb., on Wednesday of last week. Developments concerning the recent fire in the United States mint at New Orleans go to dhow that the casl ier set fire to tte building to cover his shortage of $24,000.
