Alex ander, which ia announced in another column, makes a void in the community. A personal ity has been withdrawn which gave strength, purity and lus tre to everything around it. A worthy coadjutor in the task of life, the upbuilding of the com munity and the people, has been lost to us. His influence was vast because he was a great man, morally and mentally. The esteem which everybody had for him gave unusual force to his hold upon thecommunity. That so strong a personality has been closed to the world, closed suddenly while giving promise of a long future with still great er achievements, is cause for universal regret and it is natu ral that the people should la ment the loss. It will be diffi cult to fill his place. It is not the Old and wise counsel, “naught but the good should be said of the dead”, that prompts us to give the highest praise to the memory of Dr. Alexander. We knew him; all those around us knew him— and to know him was to know that a better man never lived in Darlington. As a man he was noble, as a friend, faithful, and as a scholar he hail few equals in these parts. In every relation he bore to his people, whether of public or private nature, he had as his only guid ing stars honesty of purpose and a desire to be true. These imbued in him the highest con ceptions of honor, which, com bined with his great natural ability, made him a valuable member of the community in which he dwelt. With his de parture a light went out, whose absence will be missed but whose influence for good will continue forever. It was the good fortune of him, who writes this too feeble tribute, to have known him in the class room, to have seen him every day and to have watched him under the severe strain of moulding the minds of the youth entrusted to his care. How well he performed this dif ficult task is shown in the warm affection in which he is held by those whom he taught. There are many of his former pupils throughout 8 o u t h Carolina. These were his young friends and they will be greatly grieved to hear jf his death THE NEW DISTRICT ATTORNEY. The President on Monday ap pointed Hon. W. PerryaVIurphy, of Colleton county, United States District Attorney for South Carolina. This is the most important federal office in the State and the people were naturally concerned about the THE DISPENSARY SIGN. If there are aoy who still maintain that the dispensary law does not convert the State into a rumseller, they will cer tainly be convinced when they read the sign which has been placed at the State dispensary in Columbia. This is the way it reads: “State Commis sioner, Rectifier and Wholesale Liquor Dealer.” It is said that the sign had to be put up before a drop of liquor could be bottled and we presume that this is in accordance with the United States revenue laws. The sign is very small and an exchange tells us that “it is way up on the front wall” and “is wofully insignificant.” The State au thorities do well to put this little sign almost out of sight for it points to work of which they should not feel very proud. STATE NEWS. and Gathered from Our Exchanges Put in Paragraphs, A negro was killed at Mount Holly, Berkeley county, on Sun day. James Aitor, white, commit ted suicide in Edgefield county on Monday. The Citadel Academy has pre sented a handsome State flag to Clemson College. During a severe storm in Greenville last week a negro man was killed by lightning. Epiphany Episcopal Church, colored, at Summerville, was entered on Sunday by a thief and all the funds of the Sunday school were stolen. The body of an eight-year old white girl was seen floating down the Edihto river, in Or angeburg county, last week. It was well dret-sed. The identity is unknown. Railroad Commissioner H. R. Thomas had the barn and sta bles at his home in Sumter de stroyed by an incendiary on Friday. Three horses and a colt were burned to death. Berkeley county tried seven murder cases last week. All of the defendants were negroes. Six were convicted of murder and were semenced to be hang ed on September 1; the seventh was convicted of manslaughter. There is a good deal ot talk going the rounds of the press -about aquarr d between Senator Irby and Congressman Shell. It was recently said that the misunderstanding had been patched up, but this has since been denied. That before any voter shall be entitled to vfitc at said spe cial election he shall he required to register at the Town Council Cham her, after taking the following oath; That he is twenty-one years ol age, and has been a resident of the State of South Carolina for one year and the town of Darlington for sixty days preceding the said election, and that he is not for any cause under the con stitution of said State disqualified as a voter. Be it further ordained that for the purpose of holding said election and giving opportunity to electors of the said town to register as above requir ed, three managers of election and registration shall be appointed by the Mayor, who shall meet in the Council Chamber of Darlington and, after taking the following oath : that they will impartially register all voters who may present themselves to take the above prescribed oath, (.hall take down end keep a record of all persons who shall present themselves for reg istration, and for the purpose of al lowing the said electors to register" said managers shall meet at the ( oun- cil Chamber on the mornings of the 28th and 29th of June, 1893, at 9a. m., and keep said place open for registra tion until 6 p. m. of each day. Said managers shall, on Friday, the 30th day of J one, 1893, at the same hours and place above mentioned, receive votes of all electors who have com plied with the law, and after the polls are closed shall proceed to-count the votes and declare the election, and on the next day thereafter. July 1st, shall serve notice upon th* p"”son who has been elected Alderman of the said town. Said managers, after counting the votes cast and declaring the election, shall return said ballots to the box provided for the same, seal the same, and turn over the said box to the Town Connell. That all per sons who shall in anyway interfere with the managers in the discharge of their duty or who shall illegally vote shall he fined not less than (jL') nor more than $25, or be imprisoned for not less than five days o. more than thirty days, or both.
