Arrangements will be made to make the celebration attractive and St. David’s Lodge, A. F. M., will be invited to lay the stone with Masonic ceremonies. The festivities of the occasion will conclude that night with a re ception in the Armory. The Guards are now in a most prosperous condition. What an Editor Reads. A novelist and editor whose name is a household word in America and Europe, recently remarked, as a friend found him amid a pile of newspapers, “The only periodical 1 read through is I The Youth's Companion—and I read that through every week ' “For your children, I suppose said his visitor. “No, for my self,” was the reply. “It is a wonderful paper.” The announesments of The Youth's Companion for 1893 make this stor} easily credible Seldom if ever has it presented so varied a programme of arti cles and stories, or so striking a list of eminent contributors. It sent to the several boards of; never ceases to he a young peo- school trustees duplicates of the poll lists for their respective townships. These lists are made up of the names of those who have made returns for poll taxes and are sent to the trus tees for them to add the names of those in their townships who failed to make returns. The law prescribes this course ip the hope of preventing tax dod ging. It is very important, in order for the Auditor to fix his books, that the school trustees return to that officer as soon as p possible the lists with the addi- b What a Citizen of Brevard, N. C.. Did time and PK0MPT personal attention to the scope of a brief newspaper article permit, I would be glad to tell you of the beautiful 8 . w . daroan. French Broad Valley, of which it may truly be said ; "The Wandering Mariner, whose eye eiplores, The wealthiest isles, the most enchan - ing shores, Views not a realm more beautiful and fair, Nor breathes the fragrance of a purer air.” I could write of the magnifi cent mountain scenery that en circles this lovely valley; peaks, the home of the live lightniag, ‘Where Hogback answers through her misty shroud: Back to the joyous 1’isgah who calls to her aloud; Of the galloping streams, the pure water, the invigorating air, the varied and indescribable scenery. I would be glad to tell you all this, but of these things this practical age cares but little, so I will come to some more practical matters. In this journey from the mountains to the seaboard, I have been seriously impressed with some thoughts. First, that this Southland of ours is a great country ; Second, that South Carolina is one of the greatest States of this great Southland, by reason of the intense energy and in domitable vim of her, men wo men a id children as evidence 1 by the wonderful development' of her varied resources. Third, that Darlington coun ty, a county that a few short years ago was considered the Rip Van Winkle of the State, is now one of the most attractive and inviting of all the counties of South Carolina Your town is the pulse of the county. The most casual ob server must he impressed with the spirit of advancement so rife there. In the county intelligent prep aration and cultivation is ap- pararent everywhere in better methods, better stock, better implements and more varied enterprises. I could refer jou to numerous instances in the county, but will only call atten tion to two farms as samples of what may be found all over this historic old Darlington, and both of which are in an hour’s drive of your busy city. The farm of Mr. W. E. Dargan, with its comfortable home, its busi ness like appurtenances, and its broad canvass covered plant beds, will tell you that cotton is not the only king, but that to bacco is properly invading the domain of the fleecy staple. The farm of your enterprising merchants, Messrs Marco and Lewenthal, is another evidence of your industrial development. Mr. L. C. Morris, a real farmer, has charge of this place. There everything moves like machin ery and nothing is half done. The most minute details areas carefully looked after as the preparation of its four hundred acres under cultivation. On the land will be found not only a well conducted farm, but a sta ble of throughbred colts, the best stock of cattle and abund ant provision to feed them all and the food, not imported, but raised on the farm. These two are but samples of many such farms to be found in Darlington county. Then, young man, why go west ? The home of your fathers offers you more inviting fields. B. Riverdale, 8.
