McLaurin may think he did something smart when he slandered South Caro lina in his eulogy upon the late Congressman E. T. Stackhouse, which he delivered in Congress recently, but right-thinking people will differ form him. The South Carolina that he abused and the people and institutions that he villified, the true sons of the Palmetto State have been taught to revere. We have heard of other native Southern ers having been unceremonious ly banished from political pre ferment by our people for such untrue and unpatriotic utteran ces and, if Mr. McLaurin would be wise, he should profit by their fate. Our State’s history and our State’s heroes are sa cred and thetrueCarolinian will not long submit to having them dragged in the mud. The speech was Mr. McLau rin’s'maiden'effort in Congress and we can not believe it made a favorable impression on his fellow members. His remarks, besides being untrue, were in very bad taste. The occasion of memorial services is not one for the introduction of bitter partisanship. It is an occasion for eulogy upon the dead—a time when the living, torget- ting the differences, the jealous ies and the struggles of this world, pay the last mark of re spect to the memory of him who has gone to another. It is an occasion that should be one of common sorrow, when men are united in the presence of Death. The introduction of ill feeling and spleen mars the harmony of the solemn and impressive ser vice Nothing could be in worse taste. GENERAL NEWS. Item* or Interest From All Over World. rhe A gas explosion in Austria last week killed five nersonsand injured ten. In a fire in New York on Fri day Morris Cohen, his wife and child were suffocated. AJbank in Little Rock, Ark, failed last week with over half a million dollars liabilities. The remains of Jefferson Davis will be removed from New Orleans to Richmond on May 30. George Goodrich was acci dentally killed in a prize fight in New Orleans on Friday by Joe Green. Four negroes were lynched in Buchanan county. Virginia, last week for murdering two wiiito men. The boiler of a cotton com press at Vicksburg, Miss, ex ploded on Thursday, killing a number of persons. The question of the United States annexing the Hay waiian Islands is now engaging the at tention of the press and the poli ticians. Natural gas exploded in a house in Anderson, Ind., on Wednesday night of last week. The house was blown to pieces and its five occupants were bad ly injured. Governor Boies, of Iowa, has declined the Secretaryship of Agriculture, which was offered him by Cleveland. He declined in deference to the wishes of the Democrats of his State. A terrible earthquake visited the Island of Zante, near Greece, on Tuesday of last week. A village was demolished, a large number of lives were lost and over a hundred people were in jured. Three sailors from a wrecked vessel were rescued near Ham burg Germanv last week. They were the only survivors of a crew of nineteen. They were for a number of days without food and one of the crew was eaten raw by his starving com panions. The anti-option bill, whose purpose it is to prohibit the dealing in futures, passed the United States Senate on Tues- 4ay of last week by a vote of do to 29. Senator Butler voted against the bill and Senator Irby for it. The bill has already passed the House of Representa lives but has to go back to that body for the acceptance of sev eral amendments. STATE NEWS. Gathered From Our Exchanges, and Put In Paragraphs. A branch of the Keeley Insti tute will be opened at Aiken. Henry Brown was killed by Otto Bowen in Charleston last week. In a wreck at Orangeburg on Friday nineteen cars were de molished. Nobody was hurt. Trains collided at Sumter on Thursday last and a negro, named Thomas Davis, was kill ed. J. P. Crolz, of Yorkville, jumped from a train at Spartan burg on Friday and was instant ly killed. The dynamite guns of the United States cruiser Vesuvius were tested at Port Royal last week with most satisfactory re sults. An escaped con vict, Joe Robin son, a negro, fell asleep in a clump of woods in Sumter coun ty recently. The woods caught on fire and he was burned to death. The residence of Judge A. C. Haskell in Columbia was burned on Satuiday. It was older than the city itself. The first Methodist Conference in the State was held in this house. Marion Larissey and George Simmons, two white men, be came engaged in a street fight in Brunson, Hampton county, on Thursday. One used a gun and the other a pistol. Larris- sey was wounded three times and Simmons once. Mrs. Anna Eliza Tutt, of Col umbia, who has been a paralyt ic for eighteen years, suddenly recovered the power of walking last week. No physician has attended her in five years, all considering her incurable. She attributes her cure to her pray ers. The Governor is proceeding against the railroads which are behind in their taxes. Last week the trains of several roads were seized for taxes and not allowed 4 to proceed to their des tination. Most of the roads thus proceeded against have paid what they consider just taxes, but the assessments by the State authorities exceed the amounts paid. A PUBLIC BENEFACTOR. Why the Eastern B. & L. is In High Favor With the People. The six column article on the first page, consisting of en dorsements from cities and prominent people of Virginia, North and South Carolina, re garding the high standard, re liability and money loaning ca pacity of the Eastern Building and Loan Association, of Syra cuse, N. Y., is the strongest re commendation that could be conceived, because it shows that both the borrower and in vestor are satisfied. All of the promises of this Association nave been fulfilled and this is more than can be said about most of the associations that have done business in these parts. The Eastern is very highly respected in Darlington because it has loaned here over 150,000 in the building of twenty-five stores and houses and is still constantly loaning money. It has disappointed no one, every application fora loan being promptly supplied. It guarantees the investor 21 per cent profit per annum, while the borrower gets his money for 6} years at 5 9-10 interest per annum. Every city and town ought to have the Eastern in its midst to provide it with money and upbuild it and to serve as a savings bank for those who wish to save their money. THE MORMON SERVICE. A Large but Unsympathetic Crowd At tended—Good Order Prevailed. Elders Richard Parker, and C. P. Macgetts, Mormon mis sionaries from Utah, conducted services in front of the Court House on Monday, in accord ance with the announcement previously given in The News. A large crowd, with colored people in the majority, listened to the doctrines they set forth. The audience was in little sym pathy with the speakers or their doctrines, curiousity being the uppermost motive for the pres ence of nearly every member of the crowd. Good order prevail ed and the Elders were allowed to proceed with their service without interruption. After the service they distributed Mormon literature in thecrowd. DARLINGTON COTTON MARKET . Mch 24—tf. SELF-DESTRUCTION. Mr*. W. E. Jordan Drinks Three Oun ces of Laudanum. [Florence Messenger Feb 4 ] Mrs. W. E. Jordan, wife of the gunsmith on Dargan street, died yesterday morning at 10 o’clock from an overdose of laudanum. The particulars re- , garding her death are as fol lows : On Wednesday evening about 7 o’clock, the deceased, accom panied by her husband, left their home, which is situated across the railroad in front of the Gamble Hotel, for the purl pose of visitingafriend. When they reached the railroad cross ing below the Florence Iron Works, Mrs. Jordan stepped into the woods near the road, and there swallowed the con tents of a three-ounce bottle of laudanum. On joining her hus band she informed him what she had done, and he immediate ly went in search of medical aid. On his return, and with th» as sistance of Mr. W. T. Davis, the unfortunate woman was remov ed to her home, where she died at 10 o’clock yesterday morn ing. Dr. L. Y.
