Governor Tillman has po fot ap- inted the following officers or Darlington county, in ac cordance with the recommenda tion of the Democratic primary in August: Treasurer, J. E. Bass; Auditor, W. H. Law rence; Trial Justices: John Floyd, C. P. Dargan, R. M. Jo sey, J. A Smith, L M. Cross well, G. W. Morris. He also appointed T. P. King, Jury Commissioner. Only two of these are new officers, viz. Floyd and L. M. Crosswell, who succeeded EL E. P. Sanders and A. M. Capt. Floyd entered upon his new du ties on Saturday. His office is located on the second floor of the Manne building on Pearl Street. and live far better than many of them do now in the winter, on bacon, corn bread, and peas. The farmers of this country have hardly yet dreamed of the splendid possibilities that lie within their reach all around them. When they take advan tage of the opportunities they have and diversify their opera- tions'they will be the happiest and most piosperous people on the face of ih ■ earth. Now is the time to Lk .fin. ADVICE TO PLANTERS. Some Recommer dations on the Culti vation of Tobacco. (Southern Tobacco Journal.] The priuciple points upon which the success of a crop of tobacco depend are ; first, pure seed ; second, proper soil; third, sufficient sta 1 le manure ; fourth improved implements and build ings ; fifth, prompt, energetic, intelligent and careful cultiva tion ; sixth, perfection in grad ing and assorting. When you commence to strip your crop do not stop to consid er the probable weight of the trash discarded, but throw it out and calculate, rather the in creased value of the crop, for in exact proportion to the amount of trash excluded will the value of your crop be en hanced. The planters have al ready partially opened their eyes to the importance of more intelligent cultivation. Now open them still wider and keep them open ; don’t stop where you are , but keep on improving each year until you will finally need no protection from any foreign tobacco. Show no fa%or to a neighbor who persists in sowing run out seed and practicing antediluvian methods of cultivation. If he pleads poverty assist him, if he is obstinate crowd him to the wall. The people can judge for themselves whether this is a prohibition measure. Rev. W. T. Capers. [Columbia Register.] Rev. W. T. Capers, D. D.,one of the best known and most highly esteemed ministers of the Methodist Church in South Carolina, has concluded to lo cate in this city. Dr, Capers was “superannuated” at the re cent Conference in Charleston, and will no longer engage in the active itinerant wont of his Church, but perforin such light ministerial duties as he can while residing here. He and Mis. Capers will occupy the Columbia District parsonage conjointly with Presiding Elder E. Toland Hodges. of Mr. [Sumter Herald.] Through the courtesy J. N. Philips the Herald repor ter was shown over his truck farm at the old Richardson place, near this city, one day this week, and his eyes were astonished at what he saw there. Three acres of magnifieent cab bage , turnips, winter collards, onions, etc. The winter cab bage are just now beginning to head and will be fine by Jan uary. Prof. Newman, of Clem- son College, said, in his address here last Saturday, that the cli mate and soil of South Carolina could nowhere be excelled, and we believe it. Our lands around here will grow almost anything in the highest degree of perfection with the proper cultivation and care. It is de pressing to ride over the coun try and see the barren aspect of things eveywhere. Cotton and corn have been gathered and there is nothing else to be seen. No orchards, no truck patches, no anything. There is no rea son in the world why this should be so. It is so only because our people have been going along in the narrow, beaten path of an old, almost imperious, cus tom. The people can have good milk cows and need not be with- TO GET GOOD ROADS. Rock Hill and York County Furnish an Excellent Example. [Yorkville Enquirer.] The best road in York County is a three mile section leading from Rock Hill in the direction of Santuc. The road owes very little to nature, but everything to the citizens of Rock Hill and vicinity. Th'- farmers of the vicinity subscribed about $2,300, to be paid in hauling rock and other work. Commencing last summer, they put in the time required by law and as much more as they could spare. The road is just now being complet ed, and with ’ ne exception of a few gaps ye to be finished, presents the appearance of a ci ty street. The prettiest part about it is that the woik is permanent, and from now on the road hands can keep it in repair with less than two days’ work a year. The cost to the county, all told, was about $175, spent in fur nishing and maintaining an en gine and rock crusher. Two such roads as this, one running across the county from East to West, and the other from North to South, would be worth as much as the railroads running in the directions indicated and could be built for one-third the cot t.
