A ••Laymen’*” View* in the Southern Christian Advocate. It may be of interest to your many readers to learn what we are doing in this portion of Dar lington. Quite an effort on the part of the preachers and lay men was made in carrying on a series of meetings at the Facto ry. The work has been success ful, and God has blessed the la bors of the good brethren. Brother Merrittjpreached until la grippe caused him to surrender; then Brother Rice came forward and did a noble work for us. Brother Williams was also pres ent and exhorted and prayed with his usual fluency I am glad to mention that the reli gious and moral condition of the people around the Darlington Mill has much improved. We have a very promising Sunday school at this place, Brother Drew Superintendent and Broth er Moore Bible class teacher. Our weekly prayer meetings in different homes is doing much good. The interest increasing, sometimes have large congre gations. The burnt district in our town has a desolate appearance. Our enterprisii g nerchants will soon build, and doubtless by next Fall that portion of town will be built up. The Advocate is a welcome visitor. Our childn n enjoy reading it. It is so pleasant to sit around the fire and hear it read aloud. Our preachers are doing good work. Some charges are not so strong financially, but the pas tors are looked after. I have not heard of any of the Stewards siegniiig joint notes. Hope there will be no necessity, but that the faithful will show their faith by their works and sup port the ministry. EATEN BY ANTS. Fearful Fate of a Man who Killed Mex ican Bandits. Tombstone, Ariz., March 21. —The Indiana have always been known for their devilish ways of torture, but it has remained for a band of Mexican bandits to cap the climax. “Dutch Henry’s” band of horse thieves raided Henry Withers’ ranch on the Carita river recently, driving on away all his stock. Withers started after the band single-handed, and succeeded in shooting down three of them from ambush before they dis covered that only one man was pursuing them. They succeed ed in capturing him as ho was trying to get away. Death was his sentence But shooting was too easy a death Withers was taken out on the hot sandbeds and left to lie naked for six hours, fully exposed to the sun's rays. This was not enough, and he was then carried, still nude, to a bed of cactus bushes, where he was laid on sharp points. He was bound tightly to a stake, and then a large ant hill, which was near, was torn open with sticks, and he was left to his fate. The insects swartned out and over Withers' body, and within two hours he was dead from their bites. The ants did not leave him alone, however, until every particle of flesh was eaten from his bones. A prisoner of the band was taken where he could witness the whole affair, and was after wards turned loose and told to tell the people that would be the punishment of all who tried to kill a member of the band. THE GAME LAW. Which is Now in Force in South Caro lina. For the benefit of those inter ested we publish the game law for South Carolina which is as follows: “It shall not be lawful for any person in this State, be tween the first day of April and the first day of November in any year hereafter, to catch, kill, or injure, or to pursue with such intent, or to sell or expose for sale, any wild turkey, part ridge, quail, woodcock, or phea sant; or, between the first day of March and the first day of August, any dove; or, at any time during the year, to catch, kill, or injure, or to pursue with such intent, by firelight, any of the birds named in this section. And any person so doittg shall be deemed guilty of a misde meanor, and upon conviction thereof shall be fined not more than twenty dollars, or be im prisoned not more than thirty days. Jack The Ripper. Great excitement has been caused in Australia by the con- fession,of a man, named Detn- ming, who was arrested for murder. He admits that he killed two of the women in Whitechapel, London, who were supposed to have been killed by “Jack the Ripper.” It Is thought that he will further confess that he commuted all the murders, in fact, that he is the famous “Jack the Ripper” himself.
