The products of the farmer in the South are bringing wretchedly low prices; while the farmer in the Northwest is selling his pro duce atagreatly increased price. The Northern manufacturer is growing fatter every day. There are lessons to be taught in these conditions. The South ern farmer should plant with more system. Wo are undoubt edly planting too much cotton and there are other products adapted to our climate and soil that could he raised profitably. Why do wo not, therefore, di versify our crops? Again, we should he independent of the grain producers of the North west. Let us raise our supplies at home and thus establish for ourselves an independent ex istence, as it were. The present tariff not only protects the manufacturers, hut it also bolsters up the farmers of the West, the grain producers. It enables them to sell their pro duce at a v^ry high price and all this is done at our expense. If we raise our own supplies we would to some extent be freed from this incubus. Instead of hanking our hopes upon imprac- t i c a h 1 e politico-economic schemes, let us face the issue before us. liaise our own sup plies and stick to the Democratic party is a good motto for all. The one will make us indepen dent of the greedy farmers of the Northwest and the other will free us from the tariff’s unjust taxation. The farmer, the merchant and the professional man in the South all have interests in com mon. The well being of one de pends upon the well being of the others.
