On Friday last an engine, while shifting cars at the C. S. & N. depot, ran into a team of mules, belonging to Messrs. McCullough & Blackwell, with disastrous results. The driver had left the team unhitched and the mules attempted to cross the track in front of the engine. One of the animals had one leg and the hoof of another cut off and it had to be killed in order to put an end to its sufferings. The other animal was bgdly hurt, but it will probably recov er and be of further service to its owners. The railroad au thorities adjusted the loss to the satisfaction of Messrs. C., July 17th, 1846 and died at his home at Cypress August 8th, 1891, aged 45 years and 21 days. He joined the Methodist Church in early life and in a quiet and unostentatious way was a believer in, and a wor shipper of our LordJJesus Christ. He was a liberal supporter of the church, and actively engag ed in the work of the Sunday- School, of which he was an offi cer at his death. In the stirring days of ’76 he was the leader of his community for the establishment of good government. He was Chief Officer at the time of his deat h of Lydia Lodge Knights of Pythas. So popular was he in his com munity that in ’88 when a candi date for nomination by primary | for a county office he received every vote cast in his township. To all things for the benefit or advancement of his church, his neighbors, or his community he gave his liberal support and en couragement; a sympathizer witli the suffering, charitable to the needy, and always ready to lend a helping hand where it was needed, those who knew him knew where to apply for aid. , Few men enjoyed life more, and, always pleasant and jovial, his presence always brought good cheer; a man who abhored all display or affectation he was a plain, open, outspoken man, his faults were known to the world, his purity and goodness of heart lay further below the surface. A devoted husband, a kind and affectionate father, and a dear and unwavering friend, taken in the vigor of manhood; death indeed chose “a shining mark” whose loss his bereaved family and relatives, and friends innumerable now lament.
