The L«oved Flower.
It will be a bt»y spring when we fail
to call ycnr attention to the primrose, |
and there in a very wood reason why the '
little annnal suggestion in this news
paper should not be omitted. Many, oh,
so many people love the primrose. To
them probably it has its own Kngg<n-
lions, and particularly to English born
jieople, whose poet made it famous, but
yet even the youth seem to love the
sturdy little flower, and they certainly
never saw it by the river’s bnnV when !
they were l>oys and girls. Of course a
man loves his youth time, and he is
justifli-d in it. If a primrose makes |
liim think of laving his bare toes in the 1
limpid waters of the stream iu the
drowsy day when he was only 10 or 13, i
and had a world before him. why, let j
him love it on forever, till he dies.
In that event, once each year, at least,
when he sees the flower, he will be. a >>oy
again, and that will do him no harm, if
tie welt' a good l)oy and loved the fields.
If you doubt this sentiment you need to
watch people who are glad when tile
primroses come into the ( tores. Most of
them enkindle. Some matronly looking
dames take it up tenderly and kiss it
and say, “Bless the dear.” “Hey, Mar
tha, here's the little mou—the little prim
rose,” said another. And it is so sturdy
in its uprightness and so open faced a
plant that yon may forgive a sigli for
vanished days as yon watch the good
folks and their solicitude for the
(lower that suggests so much.—Lewiston

The morbid curiosity of some Jieople
was shown in connection with the death
of Secretary Windom at the board of
trade dinner at Delmonico’j. The menus,
800 of which had lieen printisl for the
occasion, cost ttie hoard just $00. The
day following the dinner as much as f3i
was offered for one, so gn at was the de
sire in certain quarters to soenro some
souvenir of the sad event. Half an hour
after the assemblage had dispersed every
scrap of paper, leaf ami flower had lieen
carried away.
Manager Tillman, of Delmonico's, told
me that the day following the banquet
be twus overrun with applications for
mentis.
“We had a dozen copies of Windom’s
speech for the newspapers," said a tnem-
lier of the board, “that cost us a few
]iennies to have struck off. We have
received from one man $100 for one of
the copies. We are now having printed
n memorial of the sad affair for distribu
tion among the memliers of the board.'I

'‘Hlttinene’* Twins In Cannes.
“Infant phenomena” in the style of
the Siamese twins have, according to a
telegram received from Cannes, just
made their appearancein a village iu the
neighborhood of that town. The babies,
who belong to the fairies, ureeonnected
by a ligament which binds them back to
back, but, Imrring this eccentricity of
nature, they are described as lieing re
markably well formed, and apparently
very healthy. Their mother is a French
woman of ‘Jl summers, whose family
had been settled iu the village for years.
It is needless to say that the infants
are being examined with considerable
curiosity by the doctors in that part of
tlie country, who are of opinion that the
death of one of the twins would at once
bo attended with fatal results to the
other, so that their lives may Is) regarded
as hanging literally on a thread. This
was the cast) with the Siamese twins,
and with one or two other phenomena of

The half cent has become a necessity j
in American trade, and the American
Newsdealers' association will jietition
congress to establish a half cent coinage.
On one cent lutisTs the dealer’s profit is
only half a cent, and in many instances
the half cent is lost because there is no
coin of this value. An appreciable loss ;
arises from this source in tlie conrse of i
a year. It is a favorite way in marking
retail poods of all kinds to rate them in
sin'h a way that the half cent comes in. j
and in every case goes to the dealer.
This odd cent in a large establishment ;
certainly amounts to several dollars I
daily, which the buyers lose and the
seller gains for want of one-half cent
coin. Tlie infinitesimal divisions of in
dustry and retail supplied long ago made
these small coins a necessity in Europe.
A centime is a fifth of a cent. Switzer
land has a centime piece, Belgium a two
centime piece; Germany lias tlie pfennig,
equal to one fourth of a cent. -Age of
Steel.

Work is now being pushed ou the
next Christmas numbers of the tnaga-
zines and periodicals. The poets, wits
and story writers have all done their
part of the work, and the artists are
now engaged on the illustrations. No-
IksIv njisets the conventional order of
things more than the magazine men.
The April magazines are now printed,
the numbers for the early summer
months are being “made np” or ar
ranged six months ahead of time. The
reason that the Christmas pictures are
being made is that Christmas work, be
ing very particular and heavy in qual
ity, practically goes on all the year.—
