Smoot, of Darlington County, planted five acres and realized $185 per acre for his crop. His yield was 1,240 pounds per acre. Mr. S. B. Sessions averaged 1,200 pounds per acre on his whole crop and sold for $185 per M. Rogers, Jr _ pounds on twenty-five acres, the estimated value of which is $0,500, or $200 per acre. The cost of this crop was $2,150 all told. Mr. M. S. Haynesworth sold the lowest grade of his crop Co’s drug store, this year for 12 cents around. In his first crop year before last he averaged 1,000 pounds per acre, and sold at an average of 171 cents net. His tobacco cost him 7} cents all told. Mr. J. T. Rogers made an average this year of 1,200 pounds per acre on twenty acres. Mr. 1). M. Smoot makes a statement showing that he has made a net profit af $125 per acre on his entire crop. Mr. H. T. Harllee on his first year’s crop of fifteen acres made a net profit of $700. It will be seen from the above that tobacco growing in South Carolina is no longer an experi ment, but a certainty, and it is confidently predicted that in a few years the tobacco industry will spread over that entire sec tion, and become the most re munerative of the farmers’ crops. The growers of North Caro lina are anxious to hear from Georgia, and will do what they can to assist the farmers in this important work. Tobacco grow ing is little more than an ex periment here as yet, but if the interest in it does not wane we are convinced that it will yet become a great Georgia industry which will enrich the farmers and the State. [New York Sun.) A drayman had backed up to a warehouse on Beckman street to deliver a heavy box, and the process of unloading halted eight or ten pedestrians. Pretty soon along came a rusty old man with a very large cane and a verv storm-beaten plug hat. “What! What! A balky horse, eh!” he chattered to him self as he took in the situation. No one answered him, and he asked of a bystander; “Have the expedients been resorted to?” “Duno.” “Looks like an obstinate brute, but I have a remedy. Al ways works when other artifices have been tried in vain. I sup pose there will be no objection to my trying it?” “Duno.” “Well, I’ll take it upon self to start this beast, see how easily it is done.” He stepped to the horse’s j head, pulled his left ear down and blew “I tell you,” said Mr. Schnad- horst in the lobby of the House* of Commons, “the political sit uation in your district is some thing to raise your hair when you contemplate it.” “I think,” said Sir Wilfrid Lawson, as he took off his hat and disclosed his bald head, “that I'll go off and take a look at it.”—Pick Me Up.
