Dowling, of the Philadelphia neighborhood, has returned from Atlanta, where he has been taking a course in book-keeping at Moore’s busi ness College. The cash collected at the post- office from the sale of money orders and postal notes for the period included between the 1st and the 11th of the present month reached the enormous sum of $1,000. Think of it! The country treasurer began his rounds last week for the collection of taxes. Mr. Law rence, the auditor, is accompan ying him, for the purpose of making any corrections on the books which may be necessary from time to time. Jt’DOE Sanders was exhibit ing on Saturday a veritable freak of nature in the shape of a full blown magnolia, whiengrew on a tree in his fro it yard. The Judge also found several ripe and perfectly formed sprigs of aspai Jgus in his vegetable gar den on the same day. Mr. John B. Floyd offers his services as collecting agent to the people of Darlin^on, There is a fine opening fevr the display of Mr, Floyd’s talents here, and he will doubtless have plenty of work to do. Judge Dargan is becoming distinguished for the celerity with which he despatches the business of his office. It is said that he can unite a couple in the bonds of matrimony in four min utes by the watch, and to argue from the quantity of business he has had of that delicate nature lately, he is fast becoming the most popular “connubial knot tier” in town. There are other troubles, however, which the Judge sometimes “gets a fel low” into with equal celerity and urbanity. Carolina Rosser, a small colored boy, was car ried before him last week under a charge of stealing apples from Bellenger’s stand on Pearl Street, and was sentenced to fif teen days in jail. The hoy was on his way to jail within eleven minutes after the theft was com mitted. A Problem for The Farmer*. Transgressor* of the Law. Serious complaints are reach ing us in regard to the manner in which the small boys, and thoughtless grown men, too, for that matter, are killing off the partridges contrary to law. Last year the same thing happened, and as a result the bona fide sportsmen of this section soon discovered that their “occupa tion was gone,” as there were literally no birds left in the country. It is feared that a like condition of things will occur this year if the present devastat ing process continues. Let it be remembered that the birds are protected by statute until November 1, and that those who kill them now are liable to be fined and imprison ed. As the birds are entirely too young to be of any use, those engaged in such conduct are not only breaking the law, but acting unfairly to the sports men who are endeavoring to obey it. By all means let the transgressors be apprehended and brought to justice. of A Last Appeal. The regular monthly meeting Division, Uniform Rogers Rank, K. of P., will be held to morrow (Friday) iday) night, and a circular headed “A Last Appeal” has been issued to the meml>ers, urging tlsem to attend the meet ing, and take some decisive ac tion in regard to continuing the itu organization. It is to be hoped, therefore, that every member of the Division who is in town will turn out to the meeting to morrow night. A Liberal Proposition. To the subscriber who pays us $2.80 cents in cash, we will give acompiete set of Dickens’ novels, twelve volumes(pamphlet form), and will send The Da«*mngton News, the Weekly News and Courier and the Southern Culti vator, each for one year. The News and the Dickens’ works will be supplied for $1.50. This paper, the Cultivator and the News and Courier will be sent to any address for $2.30 per an num, while the News together with either one of them will be supplied for $1.65 a year. Lucus A Non Lucsndo. Messrs. Benson and Dillon, representing the Washing elec tric light company which has been trying to secure the con tract for Darlington for some time past, were here on Friday, and made a thorough and sys tematic canvass of the town for the purpose of securing the necessary number of subscribers to the incandescent lights. They succeeded in getting 350 taken by our business men, within fifty of the number required by the company before they will begin work, and the prospect of eventually having the town lighted by electricity has by no means departed. Half a Pound of Iron in His Head Mr. George W. Bozeman, of Leavensworth Township, who was drawn on the jury for the present term of the Court, came down on Monday to be excused from serving on account of sc- r i q u s permanent disabilities which he had received in the war. He brought with him a mute but eloquent advocate for his cause in the shape of agrape shot weighing little less than half a pound with which he was wounded in the head at Gettys burg, while a member of Co. F, Eighth Regiment, S. C. V.,com manded by the late Capt. John K. Mclver. He was left on the field of battle for dead nearly a whole day, but was then picked up, and after an interval of eight days the ball was taken from the left side of the head, (where it had lodged just above the ear), by Dr Carlisle, of Edgefield, the Surgeon of the Seventh Regiment. The wound healed perfectly, and nothing but an indentation about half the size of a man’s fist remains to show where the terrible gap once was. Mr. Bozeman was afterwards transferred to Co. I, 18 th Regiment (Capt. John Floyd’s company}, and received a second wound in his ankle at Fort Steadman. The wound in his head having rendered him deaf in his left ear, his request that he be excused from jury service was of course prom complied with by Judge son. T'l MILLINERY — AND — NOTIONS. The average farmer who uses cotton seed as a fertilizer puts 25 bushels of it on an acre, to- 5 ;ether with 200 pounds of acid, nstead of using the 25 bushels of cotton seed in this way, if he would bring it to the Darlington Oil Mill, he could get in ex- changelfor it 250 pounds of meal, 100 pounds of acid and 1,000 pounds of hulls. The farmers of Darlington County are re quested to think over this mat ter, and see if they do not come to the conclusion that what they would be receiving in ex change for the 25 bushels of cotton seed would make a better fertilizer than the present plan One of the largest planters in the County, who has been ex changing his seed in this way for the past five years, says that he has saved by it at least 331 per cent on the cost of his fertil izers.
