The count of the census as far as it lias been conducted shows that there are over sixty-two million people in the United States It is thought that the completed count will reach sixty- four million, an increase of 30 jierceiit since the census of 1880. At a convention of the First Con gressional District held in Charleston on Tuesday, Hon. W. H. Brawley was nominaied for Congrest, receiving on tiie llrst ballot 32 votes against 13 which were cast for Maj. Meetxe, of Lexington. W. F. Clayton, of Gibson, Marion county, has written a letter to the New* and Courier in which he denies vehemently the story that he and Maeusker used the census ap- |H)intments to further the interests of the Republican party machine. THE ACTION OF THE CONVENTION. The action of the Tillmanites in the recent State Convention is open to the severest censure. As in our recent County Con vention, they rode “rough-shod” over the rights of the minority, and would listen to no argument in their wild excitement. The leaders, instead of using all their efforts to have the meeting pass off in as orderly and quiet a manner as possible, lost no opportunity of making issues and causing needless wrangling and discussion. The question, of who was to be temporary chairman was of no earthly im portance, and could very well have been passed over, and they could have gloated over their strength to their hearts' con tent when the time came for the election of the permanent offi cers. The majority must remember that the minority have rights which are to be respected. Some of those who are most bitterly opposed to their candidate for Governor are determined to vote for him if he become the regu lar nominee of the party. It is not a pleasant thing to vote as a matter of principle for a man whom you personally dislike, and the majority should not add anything to the dose we have to take. To persist in the course adopted at our County Conven tion and at the State Conven tion last week, onlj tends to shako the resolution of many who expect to vote with them on the day of election. Col. J. P. Thomas, of Colum bia, a Christian gentleman and patriotic citizen, in referring to the action of the convention has well said; There is a minority entitled to re- S|iect and coneideration; but there i* a majority, not lee* patriotie, entitled to the righto of majorities. The duty of the minoritv is to yield with head erect. The duty of the majority is to be magnanimous, and not to abuse power. It is tyrannous to use a giant's ing their so-called delegation unseated when it goes to Col umbia. It most certainly will ho unseated if justice he done. But the trouble arises in this; who is to make the protest be fore the September Convention ? The majority of the Democrats of the County may regard the delegates to that convention as unlawfully elected, and, in fact, not elected at all: and yet, with out the aid of the County Exe cutive Committee, they will be unable to remedy the matter. It is out of their power even to meet in convention unless called upon by that committe to do so. The question is, will the committee, now that they see the error which the County Con vention committed, take the necessary steps to remedy the matter ? to ride rough-shod over a harm- K0 ’ callwl - at . , „ , ... . .. : Asylum grounds in Columbia, less and unresisting minority. a nd the one which was located . - T. at Florence, as well as twelve An Appeal for Fair Play. photographs of a handsome Editor Darlington News: young Federal officer, a prison- Referring to your editorial of er at Andersonville, which are July 31st, I fin*d you begin by alleged to have been taken in saying, “When a man abuses twelve successive months, and your best friends, and even which show his campact figure members of your own family, to have been wasted away by accusing them of theft, it is right starvation to a mere walking hard to have to vote for that human skeleton covered with man for the high office of Gov ernor.” Taking this editorial and the one of August the 7th skin. The election of a new State Ex ecutive Committee by the con vention was perfectly regular The constitution of the party by which we were governed, in re ferring to the term of the com mittee, reads, “And it shall con tinue in officefortwo years from the time of election, or until the reassembling of the next State Convention for the nomination of a State ticket, unless sooner superseded by the action of ihe State Convention.” No limita tion is placed upon the power of the Convention to act in regard to the matter at any time. As the Executive Committee have entire control of the matter of framing the call for a conven tion, it is not likely that they would agree to insert therein a clause providing for the consid oration of the question as to whether they should be removed before the expiration of their term ; and they would be partic ularly loath to do so if they knew that they represented a minority of the party, as in this instance. As to the adoption of a new constitution, however, the ac tion of the convention was clear ly illegal. A constitution is so solemn and binding an obliga tion upon every member of an association ; the preservation of it intact is so vital to unity, that there was no shadow of warrant either in law or in right for the tyrannical action of the major ity in the convention.
