Lew Wallace, a Republican of Indiana and lion. Beverly Tucker, a Democrat anil a Virginia gentleman of tbe old school, were nominated for this im portsut mission. It so happens that daring tbe intense excitement and bitter feeling immediately fol lowing tbe assassination of Lincoln, Mr. Tucker was accused of impli cation in tbe crime. Hnbseqneut investigation, however, thoroughly exonerated this geotlepnan from tbe accusation. So clear was hit inno cence and so highly has Mr. Tucker been esteemed by all, irrespective of party affiliations, that two Re' pnblicun Presidents, Hayes and Garfield, have appointed him to important positions, the duties of which be performed most, satisfac torily Bat now, when appointed by Mr. Harrison, there comes a howl from some of the G. And what does Mr. Harrison do in tho matter t Doea bo defend his ac tion, so deserving of defence t No; be bows to his political Baal, tbe ex soldier, an I recedes for fear of antagonizing him and within two honrs withdraws the appointment. HURRAH FOR A STANDARD TIME! The tow n council has ma le a good investment and has supplied a long felt want in baying a town bell. The committee appointed to obtain tbe bell purchased it ol Van duzeu & Tift, of Oincinnaii, through tbe firm of Welling & Bonuoit, tbe pitce being 1134. The weight, of the bell is 500 pounds, it is ar ranged with lho most improved patent fixtures, and may be sound ed by tbe baud, by electricity oy by any other power. Tbe bell may ring or toll and wilt be heard from two to five miles. Tbe question now under discussion by our City Fathers Is “Where nbsil the bell be placed r We would respect fully suggest tbe Square as tbe most desirable location lor tbe rea son that at twelve o’clock every day the telegraph office receives the oorrect Washington time. At about that hour one of tbo town marshals should be in waiting and at tbe proper cigual from the tele graph office, strike (he hour of twelve. In this way a definite standard time will bo established and every one can regulate his chronometer in accordance there with. We all know how inconven ient and very often -costly is tbe enstom of every oBb keeping bis own time and any speedy remedy for this evil will be greatly wel comed. The plan suggested above is all the more feasible iu view of tbe fact that ourmaisbals relieve one another et twelve o’clock ao that tba relief may*!’* on hand abottly belorc that hour and thus bo in readiness to let every one know that the hour of twelve bus arrived. Presentment of the Grsnd Jury, June Term, 1889 Stats or South Cabolima, ) Countt or Dablisotoh. f To the Honorable J. J. Norton, Pre siding Judge : We have examined the offices, books and voucher- of ibe School Commissioner, Auditor, Sheriff and Probate Judge, and find them iu a satisfactory condition. The remaining offices will be examined, and reported upon at tbe Fall Term of 'he Court. We find the snretrei of the bond ed officers of the County responsi ble for the amounts for which they may become liable. We have visited tbe Poor Bouse and find its inmates comfortably cared for, ami well satisfied with tbe treatment they receive. We find tbe roofs of tb» different tene ments in a more or less leaky con dition, and ask attention thereto by tbe County Commissioners. Our attention has been called to the tact that it lias been the cua tom of the County Treater to be present only one day iu each week, and we recommend that be be re quired to attend daily in person or by deputy. Respectfully submitted, J. J. Lucas, Foreman. June 10,1880. [In tbe concluding sentence of the above paper a white citizen of the County is presented for leading a notoriously corrupt life.—Kd. Nkws] Tbe Summer Term of Court. The summer session of Court be gun here on Monday Iasi, Judge J. J. Norton presiding. Tbe docket was light and most of the cases were ot a trivial character, as wilt be seen ly the following ; The first case called was State vs. Jerry Pool for niHiicions mis eldef; the charge w.is that the defendant who was a tenant o; Mr. L. M> Croswell on land leased by Mr. Croswell, bad burned gard» n palings ami tbe fencing around tbe stable on the preu ises occupied by bin sett; that he did this wilfully and maliciously because Mr. Cros well bad refused to allow him to occnpy the piemlses for another year; ih-; defendant showed that be bad put tbo paling and fencing there at bis own expense and that be did not burn them himselt wil fully and mal ciously, but they were burned by bis iamil.v in bis ab sence; that be agreed wan Mr. Croswell to replace them but before he bad time to do so, be w as ar rested by a warrant taken out by Mr. Croswell on the above charge. W. F. Dargau, Esq , made an able defence and tbe jury biougbt iu a verdict oi not guilty. Tne cane ot the State vs. Bey waiUMnldrow lor larceny of live stock was thru called up. The de lendaut plead guilty. Tbe case of tbe State vs. John Henry Beasley tor removing and secreting property under lev^ wus next called. The defendant did not appear and the case was tried iu bis absence. Tbe Slate showed that certain property (40 bushels of coin and a lot of ooitou seed) of defendant hud been levied upon by the Sheriff, under an execution from a trial jnstice; the corn was nailed up in the baru and that afieiwaids the defendant broke open the baru and used tbe corn and tha cotton seed. In the absence of lue drfemiant and hia wituritoea the t elendani’s counsel were not able to combat the tcfiiiaiony ot the Slate further than lake tbe I'Ofiuou that there were such irregularities and defects in the ptocess as to render ike levy a utility and that therefore the de Ludaiii was not guilty of the charge. Geo. W. Brown, Esq, made a nolle fight con eating every ioch if gtouud. The verdict wae guilty. The neat cnee ceiled waa the State va Friday James for aaeanlt and battery with intent to kill upon the person of Israel Davie, both colored. Tbe trouble wae a uef ro row ot ordinary character and cons fUetlng etatamenu, in which tha jury coaid eaailj And a reaaonable doubt and aquR tha defendant. Ha was ably represented by E. Keith Dargan, Ecq. Tbe scene of the difficulty was tbe notorions “Round (T neighborhood. The foregoing cnees consumed tbe time of the Coart on tbe first day. It was alleged by tbe State that the iijunous edicts of ibe pond are fi ll for a radius oi two and m e h ilf miles, and that the rate of sickness 1 has inct eased each year, being greatest duriieg.tlie past year ; hat in I be winter the pond tiliii up v\iih w ater and in the spring grass grows ; there abundantly, which, whrn the water recedes in summer, leaves a mar-by, sickly, death trap. Many witnesses were called on both sides and the scicurific teatiinoiiv for the Sia'e was given by Dr. J. P. Par rott. Ibe defence showed that there were many fertile sources of malarikl fever besides mill pouds 1 sucb as heat, mo sture and decay ing animal and vegetable matter and they claimed that in tbe pres ent instance the telling of timber, J commonly indulged in around that neighborhood, was tbe cause ot I sickness. Drs. B. 0. Norinent, J. C. Willcox and R. B. R. G. Wallace were called as wi.tosses by tbe de fence to show the multiplicity of causes of malaria. Tbe defendant was represented by Missis. Ward A Woods ami very able arguments were made by tbe Solicitor and J. J Ward, Esq. Tbe jury did not retire until about one o’clock next day and after stayiug out a abort time brought in a verdict of‘‘guib t>.” Tbe case thus took neatly two days to be settled. The case of J. W. Waters for as sault and batteiy' was coutinued. On Tuesday Sheriff Johnson brought O. 8. E lis, of Florence, to Darliogtou to appear before Judge Noiton on application for bail. Mr. Ellis was charged with crimiual as sault. Solicitor J. S. Wilson, ot Manniug, represented the State (FlorenceCounty being iu theThiid Ciieuit) and B. O’Neall Townsend, Esq., appeared for the delendant. Bail wras fixtd at tbe aum of $1,800, Alter the closing of tbe McCowu case the Judge pronounced the tol- lowing sentence: liiywaid Mul drow who plead guilty ot larceny ot an ox, was sentenced to tbe peni tentiary for two years. In the case ot John Henry Beaeley, conviet- d of U king pi openy under levy a seab-d sentence was made, he Slav ing been tried in his absence. By the consent of both sides the sen tence io the McCowu mill pond case was deferred nut il the fall term of Court. The Court of General Sessions then adjourued about half past one o’clock sine die ami the Court of Common Pleas began at four o’clock but as we go to press nothing of im- poftauce has, asyet, been transact ed.
