An epidemic of meaa lea is raging in tbe penitet tiaiy; twenty om convicts are now ill and aud a sjiecial hospital baa had to be improvised for them. A convict from Datliugtou, who developed a case alter his arrival, iutruduced tbe diseaae. While no fault attach es to the Darlington authorities in this instance, it is well to lemem ber that an Act of the last session provides that convicts among whom any ooutMgious disease exists shall not be sent to the penitentary, bat be held iu the county jails until danger of infection has passed. As there is a demand for convicts, this epidemic of measles decreases tbs working force iu the penitentiary and causes a considerable financial loss.” It would have been rather diffi cult for Sheriff Gole to have retain ed the above-mentioned prisoner in the Darlington jail just at this time. | Mr. Gba?.
