Mr. L R. .Marshall, of Columbia who at the recent Richland prima’ r.V was elected Auditor of that county, is in Darlington. The Dovesville Ailianoe will meet at that place on Saturday next, October 27th, at 3 o’clock P. M. A iull attendance is requested. Solicitor H. R. Newton enter tained the children of the Methodist Sunday Schor l last Sunday with a highly instructive talk on‘ Con fidence.” Three gypsies and a con pie of bears were an attraction to many on the Sq uare o:i Saturday after uoou, *he antics of “old bruin” causing much merriment. The nsual services will be held in the Methodist Church on Sun day. The subject for the morning will be, “The Covenant Renewed ” mid for the evening, “Flee for thy Life.” A large colored camp meeting was held in Florence on Sunday last. Ibis town was nearly de serted by its colored population on that day as large numbers of that race left here to attend the meet ing. The date upon which the Wren Comedy Company will give an en tertaiument at this place has been changed from Friday November flth to Thursday November 8th Persons looking forward to the coming of this famous company should bear iu mind the change of date. Evert week the hill leading down to Swilt Creek is the scone of some accident. On Monday a horse driven in a wagon by Capt. W. E. Charles, became frightened and ran away, turning the wagon over on Capt. Charles. The Cap tain was not seriously hurt, how ever. A PARTIAL and hasty canvass of the town on Monday last brought in a fair amount for the Democra tic campaign fund. More systema tic efforts will be made to iucicase this lund and it is hoped that Dnr lingtou wid not be behind her sis ter Carolina towns in this matter of financially aiding the party. Gen. M. A Stovall, general eom- tuaudiug the encampment review and sham battle to take place at the Augusta Exposition, on No vember the 12th, 13th and 14th, has requested Capt. C. S. Nettles to serve on that occasion on bis personal staff. This is a compiU mem well merited by the genial Captain. We call the attention of oar read eis to the advertisement of Mr. M. E. Conder which appeals iu this issue. My. Cornier who was formerly a resident of this town is now pro pnetor of a large and successful feed sale and livery establishment in Columbia. Mr. Conder is well known for bis attention and polite ness to his patrons and any one having occasion to wish anything tu his line at the Capital Cry should call on him. A Ladies’ Restaurant Innovations are being constantly ntrodnced iniu Darlington, and the latest is a ladies’ restaurant, ihe well known caterer Geo. Webb whose reputation lor providing for “the inner man,” is widespread has erected an annex to his restaurant. This he has fitted up in the most improved style, and propose^ to use it as au apartment where la dies may partake of refreshments, dinner, etc., which he is now ever ready to serve them. If the ladifs will patronize this new establish ment they will find every thing ex actly to their taste. M ilful Desecration. It does seem that the world will never become so civilized as to be entirely free from wilful desecra tion The Pine Grove Church near Timmonsville, is now the sufferer at the bands of the wanton de stroyer of public pioperly. For some time past pistol shots have Ijeen fired through the door of the Church by person or persons un- known, considerably damaging both the interior and the exterior ol the edifice. Such conduct is strongly to be condemned and the pity is that the sneak perpetrating this offence is not iu the hands of the law that punishment befitting such cowardly behavior might be meeted out to him. In response to an invitation from the Darlington CouiUy Fair Asso ciation, Senator Hampton has con sented to attend, it possible, the Eairtoday. It he comes he will niake a speech at the grounds this morning. The invitation was also extended to Senator Gray and oth ers and it is very probable that they will be hero. A Tragic Death- News has readied here of the tragic death of Dr. 0. K. Gregg, sou of Bishop Gregg of Texas and one of the foremost physicians of that State. His death took place at McKinney, Texas, and the occur rence is made doubly s-.d by the fact that Dr Gregg came to his death by his own hand. He shot himselt tinough the head on the night of the 16tb inst., and died iu a few minutes. It is supposed that the deed was done while the unfor tunate man was suffering from the ef fects of cocaine. It is not known whether the d< ceased was addicted to the cocaine habit or whether he was expeiimouliug with the drug on his own body. The evidence, however, goi-s to substantiate the latter theory. Dr. Giegg had cull ed on his affianced shortly before the sad ev.-n' but wb.-n last seen nothing unusual ab- ut h :;i wa* noticed. The deceased \va» a high ly educated man and gave great promise to take a high place iu his chosen profession. His father, the distinguished Bishop Gregg, is a native of Darlington County and is well known hero as the author of “Gregg’s Hist»r\ of the Old Cheraws.” The Bishop’s many relatives in this Comity au-i those, who knew him well tadbre le* let' his native home for the far West, will receive this intelligence of the sad end of his promising sou with gt uniue regrot. The heartfelt sym pathy of all are with the bereaved taimly. ^ Au Interesting 'Joso. Quite an interesting case which affects the jurisdiction of the town authorities over the property of the County, was brought before the Mayor’s Court on Saturday last. Robe t Keith, colored, who bad erected a fruit stand on the porch iu iront of the Court House, was charged with violation of Or dinance 23 of the Town Ordinances which forbids any person or per sons from erecting any table or stand in any square or stree', ex cept the Market Square, for the purpose of exposing any commod ity for sale ; or for any purpose, ex cept by the express permission of the Council. The defendant was represented by R. M • Boyd, Esq., and the town by E. O. \Y oods, Esq. The counsel for the defence claimed that Keith had obtained permission to erect his stand frooi the Clerk of the Board of County Commissioners and also fiom th Olerkjof the Court, who by law las charge cf the Court House and that the town had no jurisdiction in the matter. Thus the case of the State against Joseph James, Lewis Williams and Wil liam Scott was disposed of for this term of the Court, and it"remains to be seen what the next Term will do with the whole matter. After t'le dispo-al of the same case the Solicitor took up the case ot the State against King Cato for aggravated assault and battery. The te-sfiiuony adduced on the part of the State showed that the de fend in King Cato had most ttn- meicifully beaten his own chi d, a bo.\ - bout eleven j cars old. The case of the State agdust Solomau Belch was n.*xt tried. The offence*charged being malicious trespass. The trespass consisted in entering the lands of James Fields and hauling therefrom sev eral sticks of timber. The detond- ant was not present but it being ! a misdemeanor the case was tried i in his absence. The verdict was gmlty. On the reassembling of Couit on Wednesday the case of the State against Tiros. Sessions and Ti os. Richardson for aggravated assault and battery and resisting arrest came up for trial. It will be retnembeied hat the de fendants are the negro “hoodoo” Doctors who while selling their quaek medicines last summer got into a row and assaulted the mar shall who attempted to arrest them. They were not represented by a counsel and the jury brought in a verdict of guilty. The next case tried was the State against Watson Alston for obtaining goods under false pre tences. The jury brought in a ver dict of guilty with recommenda tion to mercy. The defendant was represented by J. E. Nettles, Esq. As we go to press the case ot the State against O. H. Ellis for ass sault and battery and assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature is being tried. The performance will take place iu Bar ringer’s Opera House, and the event is being look* d forward to by every body with the highest auticipa tious. —The Cemetery Association’s festival was snceesstul in every way There were many attractions for those who attended, among which was the voting which netted B36.00. The recipients of the pre miums awarded by the voting were as follows : Capt. J. S. Beck, most popular married gentleman, a handsome gold chain ; W. T John son, most popnlar single gentleman, a gold ring, amethyst setting; Mrs. Williamson, most popnlar married lady, a silver fruit dish; Miss Cope land, most popular single lady, a beautiful silver work box. Mr. William Devlin received tue “mys terious box,” which, when opened, was found to contain a rag doll and some kindling wood. The Asso ciation is indebted to the ladies of Florence for their inestimable and vablnable services wbiob did much to render the festival a great sue cess. Coulter, Secretary of the State Young Men’s Christian Association, gave au interesting lecture at this place ou Thursday night last. Mr. Coo I ter is quite a young man but he is certainly doing a good work for the cause ot the Y. M. C. A. His visit here will do good. -On Friday night last the ladies of this town give a fentiv.il for the, benefit of the Methodist Church which was a grand tuicreas. The nett proceeds ot the festival was eighty one dollars. They certainly deserve great credit lor their suc cess. The work on the church has been commenced and will be pushs ed forward until completed. Tho building commiucc hope to receive some aid from the church extension society at the approaching session of the conference. They will also be thankful for any aid from any other source. Ellis, who was on tfial at Court yesterday for assaulting and shooting Lem Gadscu on August the 7th las’, and whose case whs continued until to-day, shot Gad- sen on the train last evening Ac cording to Gadscu’a story Ellis en tered the baggage car where he was and shot him iu the left arm. Gadsen immediately jumped out ot (he train while it was running at full speed. The difficulty occurred just below Jordan’s. Gadsen re turned to^; Darlington last night and had a warrant issued for the arrest of Ellis. No further partic ulars could be had when we went to press. DIED.
