This steamer ships about 62,000 bnfet of cotton to Barcelona, Spain, from Charleston every year. After fur ther stating their prineiplee, the circular calls on the North for '-aid and sympathy in our effort to improve the State and reach a higher civilisation.’’ This docu ment is to be distributed throughout tbe State, bat there is little doubt that its signers will be few. Tbe merchants of Charleston advise all of tbeir customers to stick to tbe use of ho matter what it costs, assuring tbtun that if any substi tute is used lor packing a bale it will be repacked at the pons at tbe expense of tbe owner. With all the other troubles by which the unfortunate fnrtnerg are confronted at Ibis time, this state of thiuga is greatly to be deplored; but fortunately for them informa tion was received yesteiday which may tend to lighten this last bur den which has been placed upon them. Higher authorities than the Charleston factors, namely, tbe merchants of Liverpool, have an- nonoced that a heavy grade of cot ton cloth will answer as a substi tute for jute bagging to all practical intents and purposes. This sheet* ing may be made of the staple, and need not cost more than three or four cents a yard; if used it will increase the consumption of the staple itself, it being estimated that it wi I require about KM),000 bales to supply tbe neoessHry bugging, and will afford the first instanceou recoid w here the farmers of the country have been victorious over these cruel, exacting “Trusts.” A SKRIOUiTINCONVENIENCE Heretofore the weights marked on the coltou bales have beeu re oeived by the railroad companies as correct, but at tbe first of tbe present year they insned an order requiring their agents to weigh every bale as it was received. The accomplishment of such a task will be well nigh impossible with the force ot hands now employed at this depot. With his usual spirit, however, Mr. Ouslow our efficient agent, is endeavoring to carry out bis instriKtious ; but if some relief is uot afforded him iu the near fu- tuje, when the freight business is sure to be twice as great as it is even now, business will literally co ne to a stand-still at the depot. As it is, goods are sucked up iu every direction, and the merchants have gioai difficulty iu getting hold of them owing to the large amount of cotton which has to be weighed bale by bale. Business of all kinds is greatly impeded, and it is hoped that the rail to.id company will take some action in tbe matter at once. We understand that they have beeu requested to adopt a plan which lias worked very suc cessfully in Columbia, that is, to accept even bale at a standard weight, any. 475 pounds. By ac ceding to '.his reasonable proposal, they will relieve our merchants of serious inconvenience IT WON'T*BAPPEN AGAIN. T4e unexpected rash of adver tisements during the past week has had the effect of exhausting a considerable portion of the space which we have usually devoted to reading matter. As this state of affairs was totally unexpected, we trust that our readers will conso'e themselves for any deiinquincies in the present issue by a recollec tion of the efforts we have made during the past year to furnish them with all the news w hich could be obtained. By next week such arrangements tor enlarging tbe pa per will have been peift-cted as will allow us the usual umoaut of space fur news items.
