Early M a jaror for the the United States bas been drawn Janaary term of District Coart. Mb W. H. Talley, a prominent cotton buyer of Columbia, is spend ing the week in Darlington. Mb. H. A. Uymes, one of the teachers in the Golnmbia Graded Schools, has come home to spend Christmas. The enterprise of the Neais and Courier seems never-ending. They have recently established a Bureau at Havana, Cuba. On the 15th inst, the President sent to the Senate the nomination ofMrl. Blanche C. Law as Post mistress at Darlington. We are glad to welcome home for the holidays, Cadet Robert L. Dargan. He is looking well and expresses bimselt as pleased with the lite at the Citadel. Mb. W. A. Dowling of Philadel phia Township killed last week a two year old hog, raised in the piny woods, that weighed 322 pounds net. On Friday afternoon, at three o’clock the ladies ot the Presby terian Chorch will give a Christ mas entertainment for the children of the Sunday School. Union services were held last Sunday night in the Presbyterian Church. The collection taken up at that Church on next Sunday will be for the benefit of the Sun day school. Rev. W. T. Capers, D. D. deliver ed the address before the Historical Society ol the Methodist Conference last week. His subject was “The repititions of history in the progress of Christianity.” The Florence Amateurs rentier ed “Led Astray” on Wednesday evening. We are indebted to the committee for complimentary tick ets and regret that circumstances prevented ns from attending. The Ladies of the W. C. T. U. assisted by the Knights of the “White Cross,’’ and “Band i f Hope,” will give a free entertain ment at St. John’s Academy on Tnesday evening, Dec. 28th, at 7 o’clock. The Ci lumbia Correspondent ol the News and Courier, under date of Dec. 16th., says: Col. E. R Mclver, of Darlington, the efficient chairman of the Agricultural Com mil tee of the session of 1884 85 was on the floor of the House to day • A LAMP exploded on Tuesday night, in the store of Marco & Lew ontbal, and the alarm of fire that -was given caused quite an excit- ment in the crowd that was gather ed on the square at the tiire. The fire was extinguished before any damage was <ione. The stock of beautiful books and handsome Xmas cards and Xmas presents received this year by Bry an 4 Co., of Columbia, is the finest which has been in the State for years. To several of onr citizens he expressed his approba tion of the business like manner in which the work of the office is con- dneted under tho efficient manage ment of Mr. John K. Mclver. Sheriff Cole returned to Dar lington last week with Dembo Pur vey, a negro boy who recently stole ahorse from Mr. J. Boyd Wither spoon, near Lydia. Purvey was going through Sumter with his prize, when Mr. J. O. Durant re ' cognized it and telegraphed sheriff Cole. The many friends of Col. W. E. James, the popular commander of oor regiment, will regret to learn that he met with a serious accident one morning last week. He was cutting np meat when the hatchet slipped, and striking him across the 1m, nearly cat his hand in two. Mr. Theo. DeHon, representing Lucas <£ Richardson, of Charleston, was in town this week, and lelt with ns a copy of the “Darlington Illustrated Annual” for 1887. The “Annual” is a handsomely prepared Almanac, containing pictures and descriptions of many things and places of public interest, together with the advertisements of our merchants and other business men. Mr. DeHon, has many friends in Darlington, who will always give him a hearty welcome when he visits the Town. Friday night after the conven tion bad adjourned some enthusi astic Willcox man, sent up a paper balloon from the !>out of the Drug Store. Alter sailing around for awhile, it fell on the cotton of T. H. Snowden & Bro., which was lying on Main Street, next to J. F. Early’s store. Three ot the bales caught fire and blazed up; but for the number of people on the Streets at the time, there might have been a serious coufligration. Fortunately, however, it was discovered at once and the bnruing cotton was separat ed from the other, and soon exting uished. For several days ot last week there was a travelling “doctor ’Jin Town selling “medicated candy." Each piece of candy was about two inches in length and sold for 50c. Some of the packages in which the candy was wrapped contained money “prizes.” Many persons, particularly ignorant colored people were duped into purchasing these packages. The whole thing was an arrant swindle, and our Town Council deserves credit tor refusing to renew the “doctor’s” license on Monday morning, after they had found oat his manner of doing busi ness. Lawton has just return ed from the West with a car-load of fine mules. —The Baptist of this place are to have a magic lantern entertainment in the Baptist Church ou Monday night, December 27th. James drove rapidly to town where under the skillful management of his physicians the flow of blood was checked and the wound properly dressed, The Colonel is now doing well. On Saturday morning Dec. 17th, Hoses McCall, son of Mr R. B Hetties fell in the Are, at his home near Palmetto, and was fatally burned. His brother left him stand ing in front ot the fire, and when be returned to the room about three minutes later, found the unfortunate young man lying with bis bend •gainst the back of the chimney, and his back, shoulders and arms horribly burnt Mr. Nettles died at 8 o’clock Sunday night and was buried at 3.30 Mouday afternoon at the Presbyterian grave yard in Darlington. He was about twenty one yean of age. It is supposed that ha bad a fit when the accident occurred aa he waa subject to ep- Itapay., !
