The defense closed, and, in re

I wouldn’t have noticed it if I
hadn't known him so well; talked
sensibly and said he wm going to
Summerville.

Mr. E O. Woods, made the first
argument to the jury in behalf of
the State. He wm followed by
Messrs. Clarke, McNeil, Brown,
and Geo. W. Dargan, for Bloom
and Mr. C. S. Nettles, for Arm
strong. Mr. J. /. Ward closed for
the State. All of the arguments
were fine. His Honor clearly in
structed the jury m to their duties
and they retired at 6o’clock, bring
ing in a verdict after an absence of
almost two hours of ’foot guilty” m
to Bloom and “guilty of manslaugh
ter” m to Armstrong. The Jndge
sentenced Armstrong to imprison
ment in the Penitentiary for fifteen
years. The trial excited mnch in
terest and the Court room wm
Ailed with spectators daring the
whole time.

the whole of the recent editorial in the
DArlington Newt, on the subject of a
day train to Columbia from the Pee Dee
Seotioo.
Mb. Hoary Bloekmon died ot his home
in Swift Creek Township on 0:t. 81, 188b,
and was buried the)following doy. He wo*
born Dec. 14; 1788, and woe, therefore, in
the 99th year of hit age. Mr Blackmon
was a rets ran of the war of 1812, and woe
quite a htl* old gentleman up to within a
short time of hit death. He had a large
family of ohillren and left many deoend-
ants. It ie the lot of few men to ha** their
span of life prolonged almost a eentuary,
and to look npon three large general i one
of their posterity.
Such sn election day at that of Tuesday
has not been known in Darlington for
Tears. Many persons did not k iowtbat
the election was being held. What a con
trast to ten years ago! Dp to the hour of
going to press about a doxen polls had
been heard from. The To.e ie reported ae
being remarkably light all o*er the Coun
ty. At Darlington 228 Totes were polled;
Lydia 126; Meoheniesville 41; Leavens,
worth, 168; Cartersville. 490; James X
Roads, 61 ; Society Hill. 74. The rote at
Darlington was as follows : Edwards 191 ;
Kershaw. 181 ; King, 181; DuBose, 179 ;
Byrd. 178 Evans. 221 ; Bass, 221 ; Ward,
221; Law, 220 ; Spain, 221 ; Parnell, 202.

Court ProceedinffH.
When we went to press last week the
cate of the State v*. Wm. Fields was being
tried. The Slate was represented by Mr.
Nettles and the defendant by Mr. Brown.
On the 6tb of July last some one shot at
Mr. Jos. James in day light while he was
walking a'ong the road. Mr. James
claimed that he recognised Wm. Fields as
the assailant. The officer who arrest* I
Fields testified that he came without re
sistance and that his musket, wt^ch was
in his house, looked as if it had no< been
shot in some time. The jury, after a short
absence, readered a verdict of ‘-not quilty.”
Friday and Saturday, of last week were
devoted to the Douglas murder trul. a
full account of which will be found on
another pegs. On Saturday night the
Oouit took a recess until 10 o'clock on
Wednesday morning, at wbi.-b time the
Court of General Sessions was adjourned
and the Common Pleas called Tbe fir-t
oast taken np was that of Mrs. Blanche l’.
Law, against B. A. Early. The acting
Solicitor deserves great credit for the
dispatch with which ths business of Hi*
Court af Sessions was disposed o<—a wnra
in Which he was greatly aided by th
Steaographer. It has been estimated that
a whole day was saved during the murder
trial by having a Stenographer.

for murdor at the Iasi term of court con
victed. This report I hereby pronounce
as a deliberate falsehood. >. My only con-

1 was subsequently summoned as a State
witness in the case, and upon my request
lb* acting-solicitor contented to my not
going upon the stand and testifying. I
will further etile, I am not acquainted
with Mr. Bloom, and have no feelings of
enmity against him whatever.
