OB passing Hertz’s trait store on Etarle Street, one is struck with its appearance. The variety of the firait and its artistic arrangement, reminds one more ot the Charleston etores than anything in that line we have ever seen in this section. Tbb Drag Store of Willcox ft Co„ aider the Enterprise Hotel is one of the handsomest in the State. The stock ol fancy articles attracts particular attention. Ne«’ goods are being constantly received and quickly sold. The Darlington correspondent of the “Newt and Courier” has receiv ed a commnnication from that pa per asking him to furnish for publi cation sketches of the lives and pnblie services of the Democratic nominees for the Legislature from this county. Both sermons were flue, and the congregation, both in the morning and evening, were large. TBB many fhends of Mr. A Wein berg will be glad to know that he bus obtained so desirable a stand for bis general merchandise as that formerly occupied by Mr. Frank Early. The good rain of tbe night before put an end to the diea- greeableduet of thepatt month, and made it very much pleasanter. The comfort of tbe visitors will be greatly Increased by tbe fed that they oen obtain at tbe Baiaar on the ground ae good a dinner ae they could get in Darlington The Besaat.ie conduct ed this year by the ladies who are endeav oring to raise enough money to enclose the Baptist grave-yard; refreshments of all kinds will be sold. Merts, the enterpris ing fruiterer is on the grounds with a tempting array of hie choice slock. The exhibits excel those of any previous year, and there is every indication that a large crowd will be in attendance on Thursday, the great day, ( The Oatbolios of 8very reason to be proud ot the handsome Cborcb which they have recently erected. Work was begun on it in March last, and by May 1st services were held in it. On the 3rd Sunday in each month Rev. W. J. Wright, of Charleston, visits Florence for the purpose of bolding services. On Sunday before last he was accotnpained by Bishop Northrop, who administered tbe rite 'of confirmation to nineteen persons, font males and fifteen females. There were three services during the day, and on each oc casion, tbe Church was crowded. The Bishop preached two admir able sermons. The Church appears to be in a most flourishing con dition ; tbe congregation numbers about 80. On Friday morning at 5 20 o’clock and again in tbe afternoon at 2 45, this whole section ot the country was visited by severe shocks of earthquake, each of which lasted for at least twenty seconds. These shocks were heavier than any since Aug. 31. In Summerville a good deal of new brick-work fell, and it is said that it will take $8,000 to repair tbe damage. The Custom House in Charleston was cracked to such an extent on tbe outside wall that one could place bis band into the opening. The shock* were quite severe in Colombia, Darling ton, and, in fact, all over tbe State The extent of this disturbance was greater than any which proceeded it, as far north as Washington and as far west as Ohio, the quiver was felt. In some parts of the State those who talk abont “cutting down tbe expenses of the government” argue that a Court Stenographer is a lux ury which can be dispensed with. If there are any who hold this view in Darlington County, it would be well for them to visit Court while it is in session and watch tbe interesting work of our accomplish ed Stenographer, F. F. Covington, Esq. Let the smooth and prompt manner in which all tbe business is now conducted be compared with the old time way, when the witness would have to wait so often until the Judge, who was taking down the testimony in long hand, could catch np with him. When this comparison is made, we think it will be found that, apart from all other considerations, tbe expense saved the County will more than compensate for the salary paid the Stenogrupbei.
