A Countv Farmers’ Convention will be organized at Darlington on Thursday, October 7. Samples ot the sand which came from the flssares daring the earth quake at Charleston have been re ceived by Mr. J. F. Early, and are near oa exhibition at his store. On October 8, Mr. B. O. Parnell, deputy sheriff, carried to the asy lum at Odumoia an insane oolored woman from the Florence neighbor hood named Martha Wilson. Tns Sheriff returned to Derliugtoo on Friday with Charier Armstrong, who is ohargod with the killing of Mr. Dougins. Armstrong was errsstsd arar MeCall’s station in Marlboro’ County. His tapturo throws no light on the affair as ho lasists that ho did not kill Mr. Dougins. The Governor has appointed the following CommiMioners of Elec tion for Darlington County: For the State and oonnty boxes—J. G. McCall, D. M. Smoot, J. B. Law; for the Federal boxes—J. G. Me Gown, W. B. Dargmn, W. F, Early. Monday, Oct 4, was salesday; the square was crowded with peo ple, and piled up with cotton. The merchants did a good business, and were happy. The great activity c n the square gave Darlington the appearance of being a large town. The Charleston Dispatch says: “Capt. fl. Bebrf ns of Darlington, came to the city to see the ruins, and decided to stay. Subsequently be brought a force of bands, and baa all the work be can do Mr. Behrens made the bricks for the Darlington Factory.” Look out for tramps! Two rough looking white fellows went to the residence of Mr. Gregg McCall one day last week, when there were only ladies in the bonse, and showed a strong disposition to make them selves at home, though they finally went away without giving any trouble. Maj. Theodore Deifon, (ravelling man ager for the New fork and Charleston advertising agency of Lucas & Riobardsoo, Is now e nvassing onr town in the interest of “Tbs Darlingtou Illustrated Annual for 1887.” This annual, besidea eontain ing an almanac for the year 1887, ia filled with interesting and valuable reading matter, and will prove an excellent adver tising medium for our merchants, upon whom Mr DeHon, who is weil and favor ably known in Darlington will oall in (he interest sf his work. 8t. John’s Academy opened with bright prospects on Monday Oct. 4, with the new Principal, Mr. Patter- eon Werdiuw, at bis post. Seven teen pupils were enrolled, and there is every prospect that there will be accessions to that number in the near future. The facilities for ob taining a fine education are as good in Darlington as they are anywhere in the State. Let the fathers of AimiUes remember this. The Darlington Township Dem ocratic Clubmetiu the Coart House on last Friday afternoon, at 5 o’clock, and elected the following delegatee to the County Democra tic Convention, which is to meet in Darlington on the 12th: E. AT Darlingtou during two days of last week, Thursday and Friday, arguments in the case of A. J. Satinas A Sou, ot. al. vs. B. O. Paw- ley ot at, were made before the Beferrae, Col. Knox Livingston, of Marlboro’. Messrs. J. M. Johnson end Junius Evans, repiesentiug the firms of Johnson and Johnson and Evens and Evans of Marion, were prsoent, as also were the Darling ton attorneys interested in the ease: Messrs. Boyd sod Boyd, Dargan and Dargan, Geo. W. Brown and B. Keith Dargan A Son. The arguments have all been con cluded, and it is thought that the Beferree will make his report at an early day. - From Friday, October 8th, at sundown until sundown on the foi lowing day wi|l be celebrated the Jewish fast of “Tom Kipoor,” the Day of Atonement. Daring that time all Hebrews will, close their places of business and will abstain from both eating and drinking. Babbi Blum, of Angusta, who made a favorable impression when here last week, will return, and will hold servioes in the Opera Honse on Friday evening and dar ing the whole of Saturday. The exeroiaes on Friday will be particu larly Interesting, and all who ean possibly attend are urged to do so. The Babbi will preajti a sermon on the subject of “The Immortality of the Sonl. 1 ' A fall account of this interesting fast will be found in the 16th chapter of Leviticus. Next week Mr. W. A. Lata, ot Camden, will open a jewelry store at the stand next to Mrs. Hymes, which was formeriy used as a con fectionery store. The County Democratic Execn tive Committee met in the Court Honse on Monday morning at 11 ofoiock, and transacted much busi ness of importance. Arrangements were made for the grand Democra tic rally of the Sixth Congressional District, at Florence, on Tbnrsday, October 14. The candidates for the varions State offices, onr Congress man, and other distingniahed gen tlemen will address the meeting. Darlington owes it to herself, since the meeting for the whole of the 6th District ia to be held within her borders, that it be made as great a success as possible- Be sides, no better opportunity could be afforded oar people of learning how the State Government has been administered daring the past two years. Then let everybody who can possibly do so, attend the meeting at Florence next Tbnrsday. LAMAR. —Prof. N. L. Duke, of Fairfield, has taken charge of the school at this place. Mrs. Todie Stith, of Lsurenbarg, N. 0., is visiting at Mr. Geo. W. Stith’s, at this place. —Tke eottoa crop kaa opened very fast for (ke past two week*, and farmers have done very well in getting it picked oat. —Oar towa was well visited on last Saturday afternoon by the surrounding populace, and oar aierobaats seemed to enjoy handling their stock. —On last Saturday afternoon Ihe Lisbon Democratic Club met at this place to elect delegates to the county convention Lisbon is opposed to free tuition in the South Carolina College, Of lumbia canal and the Lien law, and in favor of a constitutioual convention. Dargan. addressed his Marion coostifueucy here today. Much of hia speech was devoted to tke d seuwion or the silver question. His bandliug of too subject was masterly, and while there were tome in his large au-li- enee who differed wiih him, yet all agreed that bis presentation of the subject was remarkably clear and bis argument logiovl and convincing. In a kindly way, and in the beet spirit, he expesed the glaring i n- cousistences found in the speech of the Hon. Qeo. Tillman, delivered in Congress ia advocacy .of silver coinage. Mr. Dar- gan’e speech wav indeed a happy effort sad was wall reoeived. Mr. Dargan is pleasantly remembered in this oounty as the faithful solioitor and brilliant lawyer, while hie splendid social qualities have woa him many friends.
