Some of our owners of fine dogs are much incensed by tbe action of some unknown partiesin scattering poison in open lots. There are several excellent dogs in our town and this unlawful work shoiiht be put down with severe measures on the per|>etratorg. Mr. J. H. Blackman, engineer on tbe L. & N. It. MBS. Sallie F. Tbe map ;s dr -wn on a scale of five miles to the inch, from the latest lai'road, county and coast surveys. It gives all the changes made in the State of late years, and is complete in derail. It should hang in the office of ever> business man, and in every school house in the county. Mr. S. H. Zimmerman has been appointed agent for this county. Mb. H. P. Johnson, of Bennetts- ville, agent for the Equitable Life Insurance Society ot New York is in onr town working in the interest of bis company. The Seciety, with asaetts amounting to $66,000,000, and nearly $17,000,000 ol surplus, larger than that of any other com B iuy, stands in tbe front rank of ife assurance The company wrote in 1886, $28,000,000 more of new business than tbe next largest com pany. Wibcox. Joo. Lnnney and J B. C. Wright; aldernatea, Jas, Evans, E. Miller aud B. 0. Normeot. Prof. Wm. Baker, arrived ou Saturday aud has been busy since he came. He is now head of the largest music House in tbe thriving city of Charlotte. Being a flue musiciau, as well as a master work man in musical instruments, he is well qualified to tune aud repair pianos, organs, aud other instru ments, and does a large amount of this work every season. A visit to the Factory Monday afternoon, showed that tbe com pany has bad a general cleaning up of tbe mill yard, streets aud lots in their village. The whole property presents a neat appearance aud tbe vegetable gardens aud flower plants show that the operatives are trying to make their homes pleasant. Several matters of interest were noted. The Mill has been in opera tion since last June. The whole outfit was new, aud most of the hands were inexperienced. Yet there has been not a single acci dent to engine or machinery, ex cept what coaid be repaired im mediately. That is, that the engine has not beeu stopped by accident to itselt cr connections. There has been po settling of the building or derangement of gearing or shafting, and the machinery to day is better fitted and can turn out more work than at first. By judicious selec tion an excellent corps ot employees are at work, many of them trained in the mill, and now beginning to earn first class wages. Most of the work is done by the piece or pound and thus a baud gets pay in pro portion to work done. Id addition to the styles of cloth mentioned in our last, we noted a sample of 40 inch, 48x52 goods made to fill a special order. The standard drills aud plains of this mill, from the demand tor them, seem to be at the top of the market for quality and finish. Heavy shipments of goods are made twice a week, tbe cars being loaded at the mill, by means of a side track, aud the mill has orders for all the goods produced. The next annual meeting of the stockholders will be held next month, at which time we expect that tbe derectors will be able to make as good, if not a better, show ing for the first year of operating as any other new mill ever built. LAMAR. —Miss Emma King has just opened a very neat aud well select ed stock of millinery goods at this place. —The child of Mr. Jacob Spears, whom we have also mentioned as being very sick, passed away ou the 31st ult. —Mr. G. W. Stith’s little boy has been quite sick, but under the treat ment ot Dr. Palmer, is now much better. —Our items have been appear ing a week later in the News than we intended The lault however has been altogether ours. —A few days ago your reporter visited tbe Centre—bis ol I home, and as is usual with those people he found every thing bngut aud well greased. —Mr. Wm. Reynolds, of whom we spoke some time ago as being very low, died ou Saturday, tbe 3rd inst. Try it =? ^FLOKEN('E.) —The town election came off ou tbe 12th iusteut, and passed off without a single row, notwithstand ing that there was very much in terest manifested on both sides, and the canvass was a lively one indeed. Hon. W. A. Brunson aud the entire Citizen’s Ticket were duly elected by a majority of twenty-five votes. The official count was as follows. For Inteudaut—W. A. Brunson, 241; W. H. Day, 216. For War- dans—P. H Walsh 241 ; O. G. Lynch 216; G. C. Cole 250; John Kuker 210; E. R Roberts 415; R A. McCorkle 295; F. U. Hudson 161. Tbe registered vote of the town was 493 (about 35 or 40 short of the voting population of the town) aud the entire vote cast at this election was 36 short of the registration. The “Boh Tails” are all jubilant, and in good humor with all the other side, who look disappointed, but there is a general content as to voice of the people. All interests are safe iu tbe bands of our new Council, and our town will have a progressive and conser vation Town Council. The “Bob Tails” bad to work against terrible odds, and nothing but tbe hardest kind of work ou their part brought them the victory as they did not spend one cent. Phoenix. WARDS VILLE. —I; is too ecld to plant cotton down here, and not many of our fanners are ready to plant. Corn that is up is looking very sickly. —We don’t “catch on,” but we are led to think that some one is lost again, or that they were hunt ing snuff and toothbrushes when they got lost before. You can’t get any more gum-berries at present, they are not in season. —The farmers of this community have organized a Farmer’s Club, called “The Wardsville Farmer’s Club,” with Capt. W E.
