Actions speak louder thai? words. Chamberlain has given us his words; let us now look to his acts. A'CTfcauog is called to the notice of the Agricultural and Mechanical As* sociation in another column: Santa Claus is coming! If you doubt it, just go to Dr. Dukes', and examine his fine selection of Christmas toys Ac, for the children. The Union-Herald says: "The ap pointments of his excellency yesterday chow that he proposes to stand squarely by his friends." Tin: American Farmer and Rural Carolinian for December are upon ouc table. They are both filled with choice reading and are excellent Agriciltural magazines. Salesday was rather dull for Christ ants times, the big crowd having come in last week to see the elephant. One or two tracts of land and a little per sonal property changed hands. W. P. Russell of the blind and sash Factory of Charleston, advertises in this issue. Read his notice, and send ??im your orders, for we know by prac tical experience that his articles are of the best quality. 'To-morrow is tho day for the election of Judge of {this circuit. J. P. Reed, who* was elected to Congress by the Democrats in 18G8 over his Radical opponent, and who went over in the recent election will probably be elected. JcDOE Dunkin died on Saturday in the eighty-second year of his age. He was a graduate of Harvard in the cltuw with Hon. Edward Everett and Ihm. Alfred linger, and graced the 1 hutch of South Carolina iu ante bellum day*. Governor Chamberlain says in his Inaugural: "During the past three years the Jost to the State of permanent ?and current printing was 8743,033 20, and the cost of printing the laws in newspapers for the same period was $174,690 66, making a total cost to the State of$918,629 86." Dr Talmage of New York is busily engaged preaching sermons or rather making speeches against theatres. We know the drama is fearfully degraded, but we think the doctor might do more good advising some of the saints not to take advantage of law or make over their property in order to avoid their just debts. ' (P Judge, Glover has been romoved from the office of Treasurer of Orange bjrgg and J, H. Livingston appointed in lib place. The appointment of the Judge was regarded as a singular freak of tho Republican party, but his re moval excites no surprise. Doubtless the policy which dictated the mnneuver has been satisfied, and hence the pres ent action. Allen, the Democratic Governor of Ohio, expresses the following sound views which should bo the key note of the Democratic party: "Public ser vants should be reasonably compensa ted ; but salaries aud fees should not be so high as to make tho getting of office a profession, and to enable can didatesand applicants to buy their way to public places." Mr. Kohn knows how to advertise; but more than this he knows how to suit and please his customers. He oc cupies one whole column in our paper to-day and if he is not afraid of print ers ink, he will nut be afraid to sell cheap. His stock is full varied and f well selected, ard his gent Ionian iy clerks are always ready and willing to exhibit goods. Call at his store, and . ^Dcc for yourselves. The Greenville News regards tho appointment of J. M. Ruhion in the place of Dr. Latnuer as Treasurer of j that County as inconsistent with Mr. Chamberlains professions of reform. Dr. La timer.') chief sin seems to have been that he strongly advocated the election of Judge Green. The 'Abbe ville Medium Bays that Bunion "has been presented by the Grand Jury of Greenville county for malfeasance in tho County Auditors office." ^ It will be seen by our advertising columns that tho Rev. G; A. Hough will open school here on tho 4th of January next for young ladies, and boys under twelve years of age. Orange burg will thus be enlivened with a good ly number of schools, and as we are told that in a multitude of counselors there is wisdom, we trust they will prove a blessing. Tho supporting of so many places of learning certainly speaks well for the seal of the people of our town in the cause of education, and the signs are truly encouraging. Mr Hough is mach loved as the pastor of the Lutheran church, and we trust that as a teacher he may be similarly appreciated. We bespeak for him a liberal patronage. A CARD. Okanoebuko, S. C. Nov., ?5; 1874. Ma. S. H. TRUMP, Augusta, Go. Sin?You remember some three months ago that I asked your permission to exchange your Wheeler and Wilson Machine for a Singer. The exchange woa made, and after i some four weeks text by my wife, and three j daughters, the decision was to send the Singer Machine back and keep your Wheeler and Wilson. W. F.
