? LOCAL ITEMS. ORANGEBURG. S- C. OCT. 8, 1874-? 86"F* Mr. Kirk Romnson is authorized to ,-ollect and receipt for advertisements and ?ub.criptions to tho Times, TERMS OF SUBSCRIPTION: One Copy for one year, ... $2.00 " ? ? Six Months, - - - 1.00 Our friends wishing to have advertisements inserted in the TIMES, must hand them in by Monday morning, 10 o'clock. ? We are informed that Rev. D. W. Cuttino will preach at San tec church, next Sunday,on the subject of Baptism. We advise any of our readers, who Wish to purchase a buggy, to examine the one advertised in another column. It is ono of the most convenient in town._ We have a communication from "A. B." which,-together with another from "C. D." is pressed out of this issue. They will both appear in oUr next, however, even if we getone from "E.F" Mrs. Oliver, the widow of the late Col. T. W. Oliver, has become an assis tant in Mr. Mellichamp's school. She is fully competent, and peculiarly fitted for teaching young children, and we wish her success in her new voca tion. immt ? SStm The Orange Tax Union met on last I Friday night and completed its organ ization by the election of the following officers: President?James H. Fowles, . Vice President?J. G. Vose, Secretary?James S. Hey ward, Treasurer?J. C. Pike, See notice of Mr. J. A. Williams, practical house and fancy painter. Mr "Williams has had an experience of j twenty-five years in this line ofbusiness, ? aud. all jobs entrusted to him will be executed in the neatest style. Call, or leave your orders, at his residence on Market Street. Mr. C. D. Kortjolin has in a fresh supply of groceries liquors &c, which we believe it is useless to call attention to; for Kortjohn is a man who natur ally draws people to him by his genial manners and fair dealing, and,'besides this, the reputation of his store for blending cheapness with superiority of quality, is well known. On Thursday night last, a most atro cious murder occurred at Georges' Station. It appears that while Mr. S. T. Jackson and Mr. Stoudenmire' were closing up their store to retire, tin unknown and concealed fiend fired upon the party, almost instantly kill ing Mr. Jackson. He is represented as a highly respected aud peaceable ci fixen, und the cause of the crime is still a mystery. Th e meeting in Charleston in favor of fair play in the coming election was large and earnest, being attended by both parties, and it is hoped that it may be productive of good results. We repeat what we said before, that if the Radicals don't intend to cheat in this election, they will cause a good Conservative to be appointed as one of the Commissioners of Election at each poll. Policy alone, if not. hon csty, would dictate such a course, if j fraud is not the game. Mr. T. B. Boyd has returned from tho North with a stock of $10,000 worth of boots and shoes, besides a full supply of groceries. It is probably the largest and finest stock of the kind ever offered in Orangeburg, and we would advise every body, now that winter is coming on, to go around to Boyds and get something that will keep the feet warm and comfortable. You can get suited in this store just us well as auy where in the State, aud, if from wearing broken shoes you get colds, you have yourselves and not Mr Boyd to blame. See his advertisement. We were refreshed this week by a visit from Rev. J. G. Williams, author of "The Invasion of tho Moon," who was here for several days assisting in a protracted meeting iu the Baptist church, and we dont know when wo have experienced so pleasant an "inva sion" upon our usually monotonous duties. We were also honored with a call from * Mr. T. A. M. Cook, tho affable County Auditor of Marlboro', who was on his return from the Springs, whither he hod gone for the mingled purpose of seeking health aud pleasure. We were glad to note his success iu the attainment of both of his objects. Much has been Eaid during the campaign about "surroundings," but wo think now tho Chamberluinitcshad better drop the subject, since, in addi? tion to the illustrious trio, Whit temore BoW^ondPatterson, they have now taken in the gay 'aud festive young Governor. Radical Confusion. The Orangoburg precinct Republi can meeting,' for the purpose of electing delegates to the County Convention, took place hero on Tuesday, but did not prove very harmonious in its oper ations. McKinlay was made temborartfj chairman,, and upon the election' for Ipj permanent chairman. Byos was declar ed elected. To this, a'largo proportion, if not half of those present, dissented, I arid, claiming that gag law was prac- f taced upon them; withdrew, and organ J ized another meeting in the Schopl house by .the election of John Thomp* j son chairman,, and Wm.' Brown njitpl John Dixqu secretaries. ; They then unanimously elected, the following delegates to the county nom inating Convention: Abram Martin, Wm. Brown, A. B. Knowltou, John Thompson, Peter McFall, John Gar michael, J. Felder Myers, Jas.. Adams Peter Walker and Edward Aiken, ' ! The other meeting elected J. C. Moss T. K. Sasportas* Marshall Jones, Benj Byns, F. R. McKinlay, R. Turner, Isaao JonjeV tSeorge Uolivsr, Sandy McMichael and R. Adams. ! '^J The People's; Meeting. The people's meeting on Monday in opposition to the Ring was large land enthusiastic, and a greater number of J colored people attended and took' an interest than was expected for I this I politically enslaved Radical County. I Col. A. D. Goodwin called the meet ing to order, and upon motion> Dr. T. A. Elliott was called to the chair, and Mr. Edward Felder requested to act as -Secretary. The first and chief business was the election of delegates to the Convention in Columbia, which after considerable pleasant skirmishing, in which nobody was hurt, resulted in the selection 0f| W.T. Rives, \y. A. Easterliri, F. W. Fairy, N. W. Sistrunk and Charles I nub net. After the adoption of the following resolutions, proposed by Mr: Samuel Dibble, the meeting adjourned: Resolved, That a Provisional Ex ecutive Committee of five members be appointed by the chair, whose duty it I shall be to adopt such measures as will place before the people of this county, a County Ticket, which will truly rep resent the honest voters of the County, and which will commend itself to the support of our good citizens, irrespec tive of parties. Resolved, That said Committee shall be authorized, if it thinks proper, so to do, to enter into correspondence with any other political association in the County, und to act with such other associations, as they may deem advis able, in order to secure the object set forth in the first of these resolutions. S. Dibble, F. W. Fairy, Dr. B.H. Knotts, W. C. Wolfe and D. K. Mor ris were appointed on this Committee. For th.e .Legislature. CAPTAIN P. W.
