Death of E. 0. Tharin.
On Friday inst the deceased died at bis
residence "Poplar Spring1' at the age of
sixty six. Mr. Tharin was a native of
Charleston and for nearly 18 years held
the position of flour infpector in that
City. Hj8 declining health induced him
to seek the retirement of tbo country, and
after a stay of eleven month') he fell under
a stroke of apoplexy,'His remains were
buried in the cemetery of the Episcopal
Church. A large number of friends
attended tbo funeral.

Of the Young America Fire Engine
Co. On the twenty fourth the Young
America's will celebrate their seventh,
anniversary rind as both Fire Companies
are going to parade we may expect some
thing that wil} help to enliven these dull
times. Roth companies wish to decorate

Tbo people of South Carolina ought to
know tbat.if they bring in immigrauU as
laborers alone, tboy are not introducing
an clement as inharmonious as the one
they already have.
The only way to make tbo new comer
assist us in advancing the interests of
the State, agrlcuiiv.rnlly and poiiiicaliy.is
to make him feel that be is ouo of us
by^givinghim an merest in the soil equal
with ourselves ns land owners.
There is an abundance of good Innd in
Orangcburg County for the settlement of
nno or two thousand, and money enough
too to loau them for a few years. No|
investment would pay us belter. Ail
that is ncccssnry is combination, and
unity of action and sentiment.
Ono condition is deplorable, and if we
wish to relievo it, wo must either get men
to immigrate, or we may bo forced to
emigrate.
Everything else has been tried and
failed. Let the people of Orangeburg
County meet together at once, and estab
lish an Immigration society.

is moving in this matter Orangc
burg is, in a manner doing nothing. I
hope at the coining meeting, some practi
cal measure will be adopted, by which
white Immigrants will be induced to come
among us, and aid us to get rid of the
intolerable government which is eating
?up our substance, and grinding .us to
