On Monday at 1 30 P.M., in a at 129 West Twenty -seventh street, Wil liam Scanlon, nged 19, of of 350 East Twentieth street, was fatally stabbed ^ James McMahon, nged 10. Scanlon tee* employed as driver by Crotty & Maddejp soda water manufacturers in the batch meat ig which tho boys fought. He had worked for them nearly eighteen month** and bore nn excellent reputation For in dustry and honesty. McMahon also worked occasionally for the same firm, but was discharged a few weeks ago. Ho slept in a stable on the premises, and kor a week or two past.has subsisted Upon odd quarters given him, workaround tho stable, and upon what ho could steal. Scan Ion owed him a dollar and a half for washing his wagon. On Saturday night he demanded his money, but Scan* Ion said ho was short and paid him only one dollar. McMahon grew Very iangry and swore that "he would get even tratfc | him; that he knew half adozen boyst&at . could lick him." Seanlon promised to pay him as soon as. he could, and the dispute ended there. Yesterday when Scanlon returned from his delivery trip. McMahon again de manded his money, and used very abusive language. Scanlon reminded him that Crotty & Madden had ordered him tcstay aw iy from the premises, and told him ha would put him out if he did not go. McMahon grew more abusive, whereupon Scanlon seized him and they had a scuffle of a minute's duration, which ended in McMahon's being put but, with his face considerably bruised. As ho went out . he turned and swore that he would have his revenge. Several other employees who saw the scuffle and did not interfere ahc Wrd iho 'threat, bvi ihs$\$hS~im~-~ merely designed to collect a mob of the youug thieves of the neighborhood, with whom he had been consorting, and way lay Scanlon. He was absent hardly a minute. Emilc Bourlicr, the bookkeeper, saw him when he returned, and suspected that ho intended to renew the fight, but, Bceing no weapon, thought he would let ! them fight it out. As the boy passed James Slattery, also an employee, the latter saw a knife in his hand, and g*np? , pled with him to take it away. "Let go. . of me, Jim Slattery," said the boy. "Liet" go of me or I'll stick you, too." Slattery snya that he thought of his wife and children, and deemed it best to let him go. The boy sprang toward Scanlon, brandishing a knife, exclaim-, ing, "Now I'll he even with you." Scan- ? Ion closed with him and a brief struggle ensued for the knife. McMahon lunged, and Scanlon, drawing back, raised his hand to his heart, exclaimed, "?h, OoNjf* I am stabbed to death." He reeled, but'? before he fell bis clothes were dyed with : blood. Slattery and Bourbler raft him, and McMahon started for the door. As ho went out he picked up a soda bot?; tlo and threw it at the group, it missed them. He then threw tho knife, which fell at Bourblor's feet. Scanlon died in ' five minutes. The knife entered just j above the collar bone on the left sido.nnd penetrated about four inches, cutting an artery and probably reaching the lungs. After Seanlon's death Bourlier be thought him of arresting the murderer." He had merely run across the street and seemed stupefied by bis crime. The street was lined with persons who had heard , of the murder, but none attempted to ap prehend tho boy. Officer Kelly of the Thirtieth street polico arrived atid tool*" hold of him. Ho then made a desparhte 1 but unsuccessful effort to break. away* j Ho was taken to the station and thence to the Tombs. He stole the knife from a grocery store adjoinging in his absence after tho first scuffle. It is a butcher knife with a five-inch blade, and was used in tho grocery to cut dried' meats. An order was obtained from the Gor^ oner to take Scanlou's body to his resi dence at once. He was the chief support of his aged parents. McMahou's mother called at tho sta tion last evening, hoping to s?o her boy. She admits that he has been \rery bad, Once at least he was arrested for stealing,' and was well known to the police as one of a gang of young desperadoes that infest the ward.?Sun,
