THE DISPLAY EXCELLING ALL PREVIOUS EXHIBITIONS 111 Notwithstanding the panic in business circles, and the low price of our leading staple, our County Fair of 1873 has been inaugurated under most favorable auspices, and bids fair to prove a great financial success. The weather prophets were busy on Monday, sonic promising a favorable change, whilo others (more numerous) took a gloomy, desponding view, reminding these around that it "al ways rained" during Fair week at Or angeburg. Happily for all, tho opening day (Tuesday), was as clear as could ? . ' ' 1 ?1 "", _______ be desired, and tho grounds presented a. busy scene of preparation, whenV the gates were thrown open at mid-day, and crowd poured in. ! m1tcii?ijs BnABS BAND, from Charleston, furnishes tho music for the occasion, and adds greatly to tho en joyment. The Hardware business of Charleston is well represented by Messrs. C. Gravely, Hart & Co., J. E. Adger & Co., and Cameron & Barkley; this latter firm having sent, up a 15 horse power steam engine, which furnishes all power needed to test tho various machines. M. L.tChnpin, of that city sends up speci mens of buggies from his establishment. Tho Fair having just commenced at tho time of this writing, we cannot spec ify tho many praiseworthy articles on exhibition, as we could wish, and must reserve for next week a fuller descrip tion of this Fair, which far surpasses all previous effort, and must content our selves with describing the different departments. These are represented by letters, from B. to N. inclusive?Department A. being devoted to field crops, many of which are not yet gathered. dept. _., under superintendance of Morgan Keller Esq? embraces samples of field ciops, in cluding bales of cotton, bay, pea-vines, pinder vines and millet. Tho show of these is very fine, as also specimens of cotton stalks, sheaves of o:~.'s, wheat and ? if(J rice. Mammoth pumpkins, potatoes, turnips &c, am here in great abundance. These are on lower floor, to the right on entering. dkpt. C, Supt. AY. W. Culler, Esq., is composed of specimens of garden nnd orchard pro ducts, including the flower-garden. It is situated <>u the right as ono goes up, and its tables and stands arc weW^filled^ dept. d. presided over by Jns. &okcs, Esq., is de voted to the good things of the ?'House hold," and it makes ones mouth wntor to see the rolls of fresh butter, with breads of all kind;* to match, and cakes of ev ?-~_-,-- - ? - ory nesrnplion lb-wind up on. But '"hands o(f" is slariifg you wiicrever you g<\ nnd fliese can be lasted only in im agination. dept. e., nnbrncos tho "sweeimeuts," of which Capt. Jas. V. I/lar is the happy guard! an. The eye wearies in looking at the endless number of inrs filled with delica cies, and the tongue nnd lips long for em ployment, but the "Times"' bar, unfortu nately, not been placed in the "tasting committee. A table containg wines, &c. adjoins this department dkpt- f. Supt. Dr. J. IT O'C'ain, contains speci mens of "Plain Needle work," and if this incfudes the "qui'ts," his department nearly embraces the whole upper room. But we must not enlarge on the quilt question, as the ladies have not entiiely forgiven the "Times" for calling partic ular attention to the fine display of them at the last Fair. Adjoining this depart ment is that of deft. o., under charge of Capt. E. J. Felder, and is known as the "Fancy needle work'* Dept. It is situated in West end of building, and to the ladies forms the chief attraction of the Fair. Our reporter, (whose knowledge of these mnttors is limited, and only professes to know the difference between a b?by dress and a specimen of needle work) was con fused by tho display, and being unable to express an opinion, asked two lady friends, well qualified to judge of these matters, bow tho present turn out com pared with the foimer years; they re plied that it was "much superior" to any previous exhibition, and we think they will be sustained by all lady visitors to the fair. dept. n., under Capt. T. A. Jeffords, comprises miscellaneous articles, including Fine Arts. Wo think the display better than ever before in this Dept., and regret wo cannot enumerate tho many deserving specimens exhibited. dept. n. is upon lower floor, presided over by H. Riggs, Esq., and comprises 'all "Machin ery," including gins, corn-mills &c, which are fairly tested by tho'committo.' dept. j., Supt. Jno. 8. Bowman, seems to be divi* ded between the lower and upper floors, and is devoted to "Manufactures."? There is an endless variety in this De partment, which is one of the most cred itable in the exhibition. dept's k., l. and m. are outside of the Fair Building, and compose the stock of horses, mules &c., cattle, 'jlicep and hogs, and poultry.? Thesa ure presided o^er respectively by Mr. W. T. M?ller, Mr. E. H" Riley, and John O. Hol num. Our space and time will only nlro.v us to say that eaoh of these Departments ,.ic fuller and better than at any previous exhibition. This can be truthfully said of the entire Fair of 1873: that it is a monument to the en terpriso of our farming community, to which any county might point with pride. Wanted. Several gcnteel**young men between tho ages of 17 and 24, to pull down fen ces, unhinge gates, aud generally to dis turb tho peace and property of the citi zens.
