To control labor to the advantage of the cin'ph.yer, and to the contentment of t,he laborer, is fast .becoming, c serious question. ?The system oi.heavy planting, and light manuring is confined now, only where sheer ignorance prGvails, and where men'run in old grooves of habits that scarcely reward Ihe'work expended upon the land. For the first two years after the war, the share plan was adopted, one third going to the laborer, and two thirds to the employer. The difficulty of ob taining efficient help obliged the farmer to concede one half, this gavo the laborer a decided advantage, and finding him self in funds at the end of the your he began to look about for a parcel of land, and a mule, to fanu upon bis own account, and the result is that every laborer who has been at all industrious commences this year on an independent footing, leaving the fanner to do as he best pan, with jndiflerent help, or relying upon bis own resources, The result is that thousands upon thousands of acres an: unemployed, and only the best lands nre under oultttre. The scarcity of labor will grow with the increasing desire of the ? laborer to settle himself upon his own looting, and a few year's will pro duce a system of tenantry, or find the country cut up into small farms, and set tled by au unskilled population.. The various views offered to induce settlers to dome among us, have failed to procure any response, for the plain reason that they do not ofler.suflieicn't. advantages to the immigrant. Our people must count the cost between heavy taxes, wear and ? tear of fences, and small returns for lack of help, and the sure result of a vast cn hanccine'nt of value fo lands which will be in demand, by locating an intelligent body of settlers upon tracts, which should bo given in foosimple to all earnest immi grant's. Men of means desiring to invest" will of course select improved and set tled farms, so that no benefit can bo ex pected from such settlcr?. The poor man in quest of a b me, and who has no fortune beyond a strong arm, must have extra inducements offered to him. A peace that lifts the husbandman above the petty jealousies, tricks, and rivalries of city life, and trains his nieditutions up ward to that source which speaks Peace in uaturo's unjarring creation. A peace that defies the discord of pas ion, ami echoes the refrain of ? song of thrift und joy. Rosy health, and conten inent go hand in hand with diligence and virtue.
