A Worthy Exterpri/.k.?Several
members of the old brass hand are mak
ing exertions to organize a new band, at
this place, ami have, so far, been very
successful in their undertaking. We
certainly can support a good brass hand
at Orangcburg, and now tkat the effort
is being made to have one, wc hope to
?ee our citizens lend their encouragement
to this end. Wc understand that one
hundred dollars have been promised for
this purpose. Let the ball still roll?
St. John's Lodge.?This lodge of the
Independent Order of Good Templars
celebrated its first anniversary, on last
Saturday, at Sardis Church, about one
mile from Branchville, with appropriate
addresses from Rev. J). J. Simmons, Col.

The Match Game on Monday Af
ternoon. ? According to previous
announcement the Palmetto State
and Orange Base Ball Clubs met
on Monday afternoon, at >j o'clock, on
the old Muster Field, in rear of Jligg's
Shop, to engage in a friendly game of
base ball. Mr. Edward Carroll, of
Branchville, was selected as umpire, ami
Messrs. E. M. Carroll and J. S. Altar
get ti acted as scorers for their respective
clubs. Time was called, and the contes
tants, entered fairly into the fight, lu>th
with sanguine expectations of victory.?
The battle lasted for several hours, with
unabated interest. At the end of the
fifth inning, the game was' called and
the score stood as follows:

The Palmettos were thus beaten in a
square fight with a club of much younger
age, and of much small ?.?r men, by an

credit; however, for the heroic manner in
which they horo defeat. It is supposed

The Orange boys have cause or feel
ings of pride at the happy result of this,
thylr first match game, and our renders

distant day, that they had challenged
the Manhattans or the Knickerbockers,

About 8 o'clock, in the evening, tlm
two clubs, together with a few invited
guests met at tho Engine Home to pass a
few hours in social chat, and to refresh
themselves with a bountiful supply of
tho good things of this life. .Short
speeches were mndo and the evening
passed off in a most pleasant manner.
The Palmetto hoys returned home on
the 10:55 train, much fatigued with their
afternoon's exercise.
