Red roses or red carnations teamed with ribbons are especially suitable. In rooms that do not respond to red, try white chrysanthemums with sil ver glass balls and silver ribbons. Flowering plants are likely to be more successful than cut flow ers. To mass several plants of the same variety makes a colorful showing in a focal point. The color scheme and same variety can be carried out in your home by using individual plants in several areas. • Unless your house really lends itself to red, don’t choose the traditional red pointsettia - if you especially want poinsettia take a look at the lovely white ones available now. Snacks We need an assortment of tasty snacks for all the informal enter taining, though lots of hearty eat ing goes on too. Make a cheese ball to have on hand. It can be made way ahead because it will keep for weeks wrapped in foil and refrigerated. CHEESE BALL V2 pound shredded Cheddar cheese 1 package (8 oz.) cream cheese Vi cup prepared yellow mustard 1 tablespoon catsup 2 tablespoons drained horseradish parsley flakes Mix together cheddar cheese, cream cheese, mustard, catsup and horseradish. Chill several hours. Form into a ball; roll in parsley flakes. Serve with crack ers. HOLIDAY DIP Vi cup milk Vi cup pickle juice 1 envelope (Wi oz.) sour cream sauce mix Vz cup mayonnaise 2 tablespoons finely chopped green pepper l i cup chopped dill pickle '/s teaspoon cayenne pepper Blend milk and pickle juice into sauce mix; let stand 10 min utes. Add mayonnaise, green pep per, pickle, and cayenne pepper; mix thoroughly. Chill and serve with shrimp, cauliflower buds, carrot sticks, cherry tomatoes, crackers or most anything. DIP FOR FRUIT 1*2 cups cottage cheese 3 tablespoons fruit juice A teaspoon confectioners’ sugar Vi teaspoon cinnamon Vs teaspoon cloves Pineapple chunks, orange segements and other fresh fruits Beat cottage cheese with fruit juice in blender or mixer with confectioners’ sugar, cinnamon and cloves until smooth and creamy. Chill. Serve as a dip sur rounded by fresh fruits. Makes about l 1 ,-] cups dip. Greet New Year with * Standing Rib Roast A standing rib roast is in good tradition for New Year’s, and ideal for the cook who has many chores. It makes a great saving in time, if not in money, so why not be a little extravagant and have beef. Allow one pound per person - rub the roast well with salt and freshly ground pepper. Stand it on a rack in an uncovered roast ing pan. Place in preheated 450 degree oven for 20 to 25 minutes or until the roast is well seared and brown. Lower the heat to 325 degrees and cook the roast with out basting sixteen minutes per pound for rare, 24 minutes for medium and 30 minutes per pound for well-done.
