True meaning- THE NATIVITY The true meaning of Christmas can be conveyed by simply view ing the Nativity scene, where the Christ Child lies as a symbol of love, exemplifying the spirit of Christmas. The custom of reenacting the birth of Jesus originated in the 13th century in Greccio, Italy, where a simple manger was con structed by St. Francis of Assisi as part of the Christmas observ ances. St. Francis wanted to help the people understand the meaning of the scriptures, to show that Christ, likp them, also came from humble beginnings. A crib was assembled in a cave on a hill, with a life sized wax figure of the Christ Child in the manger. Real people assumed the roles of Mary, Joseph and the shepherds. Live animals were around the crib. Worshipers traveled great dis tances to view the nativity scene, bringing gifts and chanting hymns of praise. At first, the nativity scenes dis played were very simple, but through the ages, they became more elaborate. Figures, many of which were life-sized, were carved out of wood or modeled from wax or clay and painted by skilled artists. Here in the United States, na tivity scenes are becoming more popular each year. In many com munities, families, churches and civic groups arrange outdoor cribs, conveying the message of the Christ Child at Christmas— “PEACE AND GOODWILL TO ALL MEN.” THE BELLS OF ZURICH Zurich, Switzerland, has long been noted for its beautiful bells. Every Christmas Eve, the Zur ich bells ring out loud and clear, calling families to church. In the United States we are constantly reminded of the close association of bells and Christ mas, many communities use them for festive street decorations. In shopping districts, we hear the sound of handbells asking us to help so that the needy may have a good Christmas too. Until children are old enough to earn their Christmas spending money, they should be given an amount to spend for friends and relatives. As to the amount - they should be encouraged to enjoy giving - and getting - simple inexpensive presents. If your children are old enough to earn their Christmas money but failed to do so, pleasantly point out that this is something they’ll have to plan. A child should not be burdened with re criminations about money he should have earned when there was no warning beforehand. Gkee&flgS to Jli .
