SEC. C, PAGE 8-The Newberry Sun, Newberry, S. C., Thursday, December 21,1972 THE DOOR . . . There are many traditions associated with Christmas. Decorations, the ex change of gifts, visiting with friends and relatives; these are part of the observance. One thing remains to make the Christmas complete. Visit the church of your choice this Christmas. CHRISTMAS COVERS ■'§&§’ THE EARTH Like a blanket of softly fallen snow, Christmas covers the earth. Its radiance lights up a storm- tossed world with the brilliancy of new hope; it brings before the universe the potential goodness and greatness of man. Through the spirit of Christmas the ideals of the Master will yet transform the universe of man. Christmas ever leads humanity upward. Christmas still lives. Depressions, earthquakes, wars . . . none of these can destroy the spirit of Christmas; the darkness of fear cannot blot out its light; hatred, envy, and jealousy cannot withstand it; greed and selfish ness retreat from it. Nothing can halt its advent into the hearts of men. Christmas still lives. Early Bethlehem Name Meant 'House of Bread’ The ancient name of Bethle hem was Beit Lahm, meaning house of bread. The name is no less striking for its spiritual sig nificance, Bethlehem being the place where the world’s “Bread of Life” was brought forth. In this connection it is interesting to note that the primeval wheat, which is the original of the cul tivated wheat, has been found wild only in this country. The star is always associated with the story of the Wise Men. In Mathew 2:9 and 10 we read “ . . . lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with great joy.” In our stately carol, “We Three Kings of Orient Are,” the poet hails it as: Star of wonder, star of night, Star with royal beauty bright, Westward leading, still pro ceeding, Guide us to that perfect light. families and friends, young and old, come together during this season to rejoice at His birth. % We join together to offer thanks!
