Not only are people concerned about the environment in which they live, people are doing $onjething about it by organizing cleanup campaigns to remove litter and debris from the landscape and dispose of it properly as well as passing laws to control pol lution and various other me thods of improving the world in which we live. Company B, 1st Battalion Air borne, 505th Infantry has just completed one of the most un usual cleanup campaigns for the ecology effort on Dreher Island, South Carolina. Clean ing up this island wasn’t the usual problem of picking up paper and leftovers from pic nics. This island served as a bombing range for the United States Air Force during World War II and still contained hun dreds of unexploded bombs and tons of scrap metal. Company B collected or lo cated over 1,000 unexploded bombs and five tons of scrap metal during their two week “cleanup”. Over 950 of the bombs could not be safely mov ed and had to be blown by means of controlled demolition charges. The South Carolina Depart ment of Parks and Recreation has now started a five year project to turn the World War II bombing range into a park area. The entire project will cost about six million dollars and when completed will host camping, fishing, swimming and a complete marina as well as offering camping sites. It is expected to be open to the public by next summer and will be completed in 1977. The work of the men of Com pany B is just one more way in which the 82d Airborne Di vision proves that the Army can indeed be a good neighbor as well as a frontline defense force.
