The Newberry Sun, Newberry, S. C., Thursday, October 19,1972-PAGE 5 Mars Hill is ‘ for Saturday The Newberry Indians are in hopes of getting back onto a winning track when they travel to Mars Hill Saturday afternoon to meet the Lions. Newberry has lost its last two games, both without scor ing a point. The Indians drop ped a 3-0 decision to Concord and lost last Saturday to a sur prisingly strong Wofford Bull dog team by a score of 21-0. After a fantastic start, four wins in a row and a powerful offensive game, the Indians seem to be losing their touch. An injury to quarterback Tom my Williamson hasn’t helped any and the Indians just can’t seem to get things together. Their 4-0 record has dipped to 4-2 and some tough opponents are yet to come. It’s time to start making a comeback and the Indians hope to do it this weekend. Mars Hill, which now stands 2-4 on the year, is not a team to be taken lightly. They are averaging 24 points a game and have one of the best foot ball players in the southeast on their squad, tailback Jeff Davis. Davis is the man who does it all—he leads in rush ing, scoring, kickoff and punt returns and punting. Avery sought after pro prospect, Da vis is an exciting player who keeps the defense on its toes every play. Heading the offense of the Lions will be sophomore quart erback Danny Robinson. Along with Davis in the backfield will be fullback Scott Ferguson. Ro binson’s prime receivers will be tight end Hooper Sartin and split end Doug Smedberg. The Indians, on the other hand, haven’t done too much to brag about in recent weeks. Coach Fred Herren hopes his team can forget the past two games and come back alive to the form that produced four straight wins at the beginning of the season. Defensive end Greg Hartle, who missed the Lenoir Rhyne and Concord games, is back at full strength, but quarter back Tommy Williamson’s du ties might be limited to place kicking. Williamson’s foot, in jured in the first quarter of the Lenoir Thyne game, is out of the cast, but he is still not ready for definite action. Tailback Don Garrick, who was held to only 29 yards in Concord’s mud charged for 71 yards against Wofford, but each Newberry threat was stymied by a rugged Terrier defense. To win a team must score points, and the Indians will be out to put points on the score- board Saturday. It’s been three weeks since the Indians have tasted victory. They have tast ed defeat, and want no more.
