The Newberry Sun, Newberry, S. C., Thursday, August 31, 1972-PAGE 5 Summer pay may affect S. S. benefits Earnings from summer jobs can affect monthly payments of students and other young people who get benefits from social security, according to J. C. Bagwell, Social Security Dis trict Manager in Greenwood, S. C. “Over 4 million young peo ple under 22 get monthly social security payments as children of retired, disabled, or deceas ed workers”, Bagwell said. “Many of them will spend the summer school vacation work ing. In some cases, this work and earnings will affect their social security benefits”. The amount young people earn at summer or part-time jobs will cause a reduction in social security payments if their total earnings for the year are more than $1,680, according to Bagwell. “But even if they earn over $1,680 they can get their social security payment for any month in which they neither earn more than $140 nor per form substantial services in self- employment,” he said. Most young people won’t earn over $1,680 from a sum mer vacation job, Bagwell not ed. “But if they also work part time during the year, they can easily earn over $1,680 dur ing 1972,” he said. “Summer workers and other young people who get social se curity benefits and who know their earnings for this year will go over $1,680 should notify so cial security as soon as possi ble,” Bagwell said. “Refunding overpayments at the end of the year can sometimes create a financial hardship.” If you have questions about earnings and social security be nefits, phone the Greenwood So cial Security Office—the phone number is 223-1711 or call at the office, 219 Magnolia Ave., Greenwood, S.
