No. 4, Newberry, died Wed nesday at the Wallace Thomp son Hospital in Union. Born in Lexington County, he was a son of Mrs. Daisy Long Epting of Newberry, and the late George Tally Epting. He was a farmer and driver for Carnation Milk Co., a mem ber of Silverstreet Lutheran Church, a member of Silver- street Young Farmers Associa tion, and a member of Jalapa Hunt Club. Surviving in addition to his mother are: his wife, Verdie Harrelson Epting; two sons, John Wayne Epting and Edwin Lee Epting, both of Newberry; a daughter, Mrs. Joan Epting Beck of Newberry; two sisters, Mrs. Rose Epting Lester and Mrs. Katherine E. Hawkins, both of Newberry; three bro thers, Leland Clinton Epting Sr. George Ray Epting, and Bobby Long Epting, all of Newberry; also two grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Friday from Silver- street Lutheran Church with Rev. H. J. C. Lindler conduct ing the services. Burial follow ed in Silverstreet Cemetery. Mrs. James Smith Mrs. Thelma Wesson Smith, 59, of 4248 Donovan Dr., Colum bia, died Sunday morning at the Baptist Hospital. Bom in Newberry County, she was a daughter of the late John Henry and Eunice Bouknight Wesson. She was a member of Virginia Wingard United Meth odist Church. Surviving are her husband, James Smith; two daughters, Mrs. Betty Livingston of New berry and Mrs. Virginia Merritt of Columbia; a sister, Mrs. Steve (Gladys) Miller of San Diego, Calif.; a brother, Nolan Wesson of Newberry; also three grandchildren. Funeral was held at 4 p.m. Tuesday from McSwain Funeral Home with Rev. Robert James, Rev. Dwight Long, and Rev. J. W. Tomlinson conducting the service. Burial followed in Rose- mont Cemetery. SERVICE AWARD-Gov. John C. West (right) presented an award for outstanding service to the state’s mentally retarded citizens to Richard L. Baker of Newberry during the dedication ceremonies last Thurs day for the Pee Dee Regional Center of the Department of Mental Retardation. West praised the work of Baker, a former member of the S. C. Commission on Mental Retardation. The citation read: “S. C. Mental Retardation to Richard L. Baker in affection, appreciation and respect for his many contribu tions in behalf of the mentally retarded of South Carolina as a friend and spokesman for the retarded. Member Board of Trustees of the S. C. Retarded Children’s Habilitation Center (1963-68), Member S: C. Mental Retardation Commission (1967-71).” Mrs. J. C. Mack Mrs. Sallie Jones Mack, 93, of Route Two, Newberry, widow of Jesse C. Mack, died Satur day night at the Saluda Nurs ing Center. Born in Saluda County, she was a daughter of the late Billy and Mealine Jones. She was a member of Nazareth Methodist Church. Surviving are two sons, J. C. Mack of Immokalee, Fla., and Vennie Mack of Lexington; two daughters, Mrs. Ethel Mor ris of Barnesville, Va., and Mrs. Commie Swygert of New berry; three step-sons, Joe Cook and Earl Cook, both of Green wood, and Jesse Cook of Monet- ta; two step-daughters, Mrs. Mattie Brown and Mrs. Bea trice Turner, both of Green wood; also nine grandchildren, 11 step-grandchildren, and a number of great-grandchildren. She was the last surviving mem ber of her immediate family. Funeral was held at 3 n.m Monday from Nazareth Metho dist Church with Rev. Wilbert T. Waters and Rev. Ralph E. A daughter of the late Lam bert Whitfield and Jenny Lou Herndon Jones, she was bom in Newberry. She graduated from Newberry College and re ceived her M.A. degree from Vanderbuilt University and stu died at the University of Ten nessee and Cornell University. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Delta Delta Delta. She taught history at Winthrop College for many years, and counseled at Winthrop, Cornell, Wofford and Florida State Col leges. She was a member of the S. C. and Newberry County Retired Teachers Associations, a charter member of the New berry Historical Society, the Jasper Chapter of the DAR, a member of Central United Meth odist Church, and a former member of the American As sociation of University Women. Surviving is a brother, Ben son M. Jones of Pittsburgh, Pa. Funeral services were con ducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Central United Methodist Church by Rev. John M. Kinard Mrs. Katherine Efird Kinard, 77, widow of Dr. James C. Ki nard, former president of New berry College, died Friday af ternoon at the Richland County Memorial Hospital after a short critical illness. Mrs Kinard was born in Lex ington, the daughter of the late D. Frank and Inez Hiller Efird.
