Tryouts set for “Staircase” production The Newberry Community Players will hold try-outs for their spring production, March 27, 28 and 29 at the Drayton Street Community Center be ginning at 7:30 p.m. and last ing until 9:00. The perfor mances will be held in May and will include the two act mystery drama, “The Spiral Staircase” and a one act co medy to be announced at a later date. “The Spiral Staircase”, adapt ed for the stage by F. An drew Leslie, is based on David O. Selznick’s famous motion picture production. As thunder and rain echo off stage the town Constable ar rives at the isolated Warren household to report another in the series of apparently unpro voked murders which have shocked and terrified the vil lage. Without exception the vic tims have been young girls— and all with a noticeable de fect or imperfection of some kind. Because of this there is fear for the safety of Helen, companion of the bed-ridden Mrs. Warren, who has been un able to speak since undergoing the shock of witnessing her pa rents’ horrible death some years before. The telephone wires having been downed by the storm, the Constable has stop ped by in person to check on Helen’s whereabouts—but neith er Mrs. Oates, the housekeep er, or Professor Warren, scho larly stepson of Mrs. Warren, have seen or heard from her since she went into the village earlier. Their fears are allayed how ever, when Helen, in the com pany of young Dr. Parry, is brought safely home. But the threat of danger still exists, for the murderer remains at large and his cleverness has denied the police any solid clues as to his identity. Warning every one to stay behind locked doors, the Constable goes back into the storm, leaving Helen to the care of the others. One by one the protectors leave or seem to and as He len’s isolation grows, so does the threat of the killer’s visit leading to a denouncement of chilling intensity. To say more would blunt the excitement of this thrilling climax where everyone, and most of all Helen, ‘ remains in doubt-filled suspense until the final, shocking mo ments of the play. The cast consists of four men and four women, as well as the off-stage voice of the tele phone operator. The set for this play will be the most ambitious one that the Players have used to date. Anyone interested in working on it, or any other behind-the- scenes aspect of the play is urged to attend one of the try out nights too.
