E. E. GAULDEN as well try to be taken over by the state and become com pletely like state institutions,” Dr. Fredric B. Irvin, president of Newberry College, told stu dents and faculty Tuesday, Feb. 29. His remarks were made in the final lecture of a series of four talks on “The Nature of the Christian College,” that he delivered to the College family during February. “But this very chapel in which we are meeting,” the Newberry educator claimed, “is symbolic of the main difference between Newberry College and non-church related institutions.” “We believe,” he continued, “that we have a philosophy of education that is rooted in our Christian faith, and that with in our community of faculty, students, administrators, and staff we want to learn and live ihe Christian life.” “It is important for us to realize that there is no perfect college in the United States— that every student and everyone else lives in a state of inner tension. The Christian,” Dr. Ir vin emphasized, “knows that this tension is resolved through the forgiveness which comes to him daily.” “He can, therfore, confident ly take his place in society. He does not need to cop out. He does not need to destroy col lege property or any other kind of property to make his voice heard. He seeks a place in society, not to make a million bucks, but to be of service to his fellow men in some kind of vocation or calling which will permit him creativity and the BANfJ TOUR (Continued from Page 1) a clarinet recital by Dr. John Wagner, associate professor of music, April 17; an organ reci tal by Mike Grant, Gaffney se nior, April 18; and a perfor mance by the Woodwind Quin tet and the Madrigalians, April 19. He realizes the relationship of love and justice, knowing that they are not exclusive prin ciples. From his study of his tory he sees the Christian faith and the Christian church as both divine and social institu tions. It will surely be the year when Richard Nixon will be seeking a second term in the White House and it will be the time—it has already begun— for the national news media to exert every effort to defeat him. It will be a year in which I expect to see Teddy Kennedy nominated by the Democrats as their choice for the White House. I find few who agree with me on that subject, I must admit, so I may have to eat those words. I have an idea that while Teddy at the moment isn’t making noises like a can didate, there are b e h i n d-the- scenes preparations toward that end. After all, who else do the Democrats have? Muskie? Mc Govern? Humphrey? One can scarcely turn on te levision or pick up a magazine these days without running into the image of Ted Kennedy. It is boring and disgusting. But you can be sure that it is also promoting Mr. Kennedy in the public eye, trying to make the public forget the little incident of a couple years ago which ended in the death of a young lady. I don’t think the public is likely to forget this soon how stupidly the Senator acted after that occurrence. On the other hand, I would guess that the Democrats would hope that the charisma of the Kennedy name would be sufficient to give Pre sident Nixon a good battle. At any rate, it is going to be interesting to see what hap pens. I think once the candi dates are nominated, I’m go ing to unplug Ihe television and go fishing until election day. AND MY THANKS I have been told that many of you have inquired about this column during its absence, and I do appreciate your interest. I wish that I could guarantee its appearance each week but that is impossible. I do hope, however, especially in view of the fact that this is a very political year, that I can be back from time to time druing the months ahead. Christian Church Mr. Terry Gunnells, Minister H.
