The Indians, who posted an 8-2-1 re cord for 1971, the best in South Caroina, have been working hard since Feb. 5, and head coach Fred Herren and his staff are quite pleased with the re sults. According to Herren, the coaching staff believes that the primary objectives of spring practice have been accomplish ed: to find adequate replace ments for the 11 seniors lost by graduation and to develop more consistency in the offen sive attack. Many names in the Newberry starting lineup for the past few years will no longer be seen, names like All-American safe ty Saylor Fox, All-District de fensive end Howard Merrick, All-Conference receiver Howdy Hays, and tight end Johnny Dawkins, one of the leading In dian receivers for the past four years. All these stars along with other top players are hard to replace, but with the help of some transfers and some fresh men who saw little action last season, but gained valuable ex perience, some progress has been made in filling all the vacant gaps. Two of the top defensive prospects are defensive tackles Allen New and Willie Craven. Defensive coach Steve Robert son is quite pleased with the performances of these newcom ers and are sure of their po tential. Last year’s tackles were Marion Waters, who graduated in December, and Durwood Yates, who was injured in New berry’s final game with Pres byterian. Yates should be ready by mid-August however, and then the competition will be rugged. The defensive end position which has been handled so well for the past two seasons by Howard Merrick could be filled by either Roger Armistead or Greg Pennekamp. The coach ing staff is very pleased with the performances of both, nd the decision will be a hard one. Another newcomer whom Coach Herren is very pleased with is tight end Dusty Trip lett, who takes the place of Johnny Dawkins. Freshman Garry Talbert who saw action at flanker last season is another good prospect. The safety posi tion vacated by Saylor Fox is still undecided at this time. Bruce Remillard, the remark able freshman punter, had the inside track, but missed a great deal of practice due to an in jury. It’s always • tough to lose good players, and also to find good ones to replace them, but they're doing a good job. The next step is to wait for the season to begin. Only then can they tell for sure how good the replacements are. Besides, 8-2-1 isn’t a bad year’s work. Sept. 9 — Emory & Henry, Newberry, 7:30.
