The basketball squad will par ticipate in its third tourna ment in as many week-ends when it plays in the Lander College Invitational at Green wood on Friday and Saturday.. The squad’s first round oppo nent is Presbyterian, the win ner of last week’s Tip-Off Tour ney at Spartanburg. Other teams in the tourney are Lan der and the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Sunday’s “Guest Preacher” at the 11:15 a.m. services in the A.G.D. Wiles Chapel is the Rev. Harold Skinner, pastor of St. Michael’s Lutheran Church in Greenville. Two faculty recitals are sche duled during the w ? eek„ Karl Kinard, Jr., assistant professor of music, will present an or gan recital at 8 p.m. Monday, December 7, and Dr. John Wag ner, associate professor of mu sic, will give a clarinet recital at 8 p.m. Thursday, Decem ber 10. C. on Monday, December 7, to play the Mars Hill Lions; they return to Mac- Lean Gymnasium Wednesday, December 9, to meet the Ca tawba squad from Salisbury, N. C. Dates given for Christmas mail Officer In Charge, James W. Counts, today urged residents of Newberry “to try remember” that recommended mailing dates for civilian domestic Christmas mails start the first of Decem ber. The national Christmas “mail early” theme this year, he ex plained, is based on the fami liar musical tune “Try to Re member” - and is featured in public service radio and TV announcements. “The idea,” he said, “is to have our custom ers remember recommended mailing dates. This will insure fast and efficient delivery of parcels and cards and prevent disappointments for friends and family members. Of course, it will also be a big help to your post office.” Key suggested latest dates by which Christmas mail should be deposited are as follows, but the postmaster urged customers to mail earlier wherever pos sible: Domestic Mails (except Alas ka and Hawaii); Distant States, Parcels Dec. 1; Greeting Cards Dec. 10. Local & Nearby Areas Alaska and Hawaii, Parcels Dec. 11; Greeting Cards Dec. 15. Surface Mail, Parcels Nov. 30; Greeting Cards Dec. 4. Airmail Mail, Parcels Dec. 14; Greeting Cards Dec. 14. In addition, Officer In Charge Counts noted several key dates applying for civilian interna tional mail, as follows: To Canada and Mexico - Surface Parcels, Dec. 4; Greet ing Cards, Dec. 9; and Air Par cels, Dec. 16. To South and Central Ameri ca - Parcels and Greeting Cards should be sent by Airmail not later than Dec. 14 in order to arrive by Christmas. These same dates apply for various types of mail for Eu rope. Dates for international mails tb other parts of the world are usually posted in post office lobbies, but, in case of ques tions, consult the local post of fice. LR defeats Tribe in 86-84 thriller A field goal in the last 17 se conds by Lenoir Rhyne and a missed free throw by Newberry moved the Bears by the In dians, 86-84 Tuesday night. Lenoir Rhyne jumped to an early five-point lead before Mike Barb finally got the In dians on the board. With 15:46 left in the first period New berry captured and held the lead for nine minutes until for ward Verno Long hit two timely field goals for Lenoir Rhyne to put it ahead, 33-32. With four minutes remaining, Newberry’s Tom Meadows hit from outside to put the Tribe in front for the rest of the pe riod and at halftime the score stood 48-41, in favor of New berry. The Tribe dominated the se cond half until the final five minutes when Newberry’s Joe Styles left the game on fouls. Two free throws by Lenoir Rhyne’s Rick Peak plus two for a technical foul put LR ahead 74-70. Bill Ellis and Bill Sullivan led the Indians back to a 78-77 lead with two minutes remain ing. The Indians held the lead on a series of successful free throws unt'l the final seconds when a clutch field goal by Long put the Bears in front 85-84. The final free throw by LR’s Larry Crump guaranteed the Bears the win. The defeat brings Newberry’s record to 2-3, while LR is 2-1. The Indians next game is a- gainst Presbyterian in the open er of the Lander tipoff tourna ment Friday night. Newberry’s next home game is Wednesday, Dec. 9, when the Catawba College Indians invade MacLean Gymnasium. Mrs. Hall dies in Hartsville Mrs. R. B. Hall Sr. of Harts ville died Thursday in a Harts ville hospital after a short ill ness. Funeral services were held Friday at 2 p.rn. in New Mar ket Methodist Church. Mrs. Hall was born in New berry and was the former Re becca Wicker, a daughter of the late John H. and Mamie Bo- zard Wicker. She was a gra duate of Winthrop College and taught school in Orangeburg and Hartsville for several years. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Joseph A. Kirby of St. George and Mrs. W. J. Conner of Effingham; two sons, R. B. Hall Jr. and LeGrand Hall of Hartsville; two sisters, Mrs. J. L. Feagle and Mrs. O. M. Cobb of Newberry; and three bro thers, Dr. William H. Wicker of Knoxville,. Tenn., Thomas P. Wicker of Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Dr. Keefer Wicker of Au gusta, Ga. — - NOTICE The December meeting of City Coun cil will be held on December 15, 1970, beginning at 7:30 P. M. in City Hall, Newberry, S. C. Mayor and City Council Robert E. Moore dies in Florida Robert E. Moore, 70, died Tuesday in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Born in Toronto, Canada, son of the late Edward and Minnie Burns Moore, he was a veteran of World War IL. He lived in Ft. Lauderdale 32 years. Surviving is his wife, Mrs. Rosalee Summer Moore. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Whitaker Funeral Home. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery. The family is at the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Hanna, 2112 E.
