C., Thursday, October 8, 1970—PAGE 7 Grattan Freyer to lecture Grattan Freyer, Irish critic and journalist, will be the first speaker of the season for the 1970-71 Artists and Lecturers se ries at Newberry College on Thursday, Oct. 15. The 8 p.m. lecture in the A. G. D. Wiles Chapel on “Ire land’s History and Ireland’s Problems’’ is free and open to the public. He will also speak to political science and English classes on Friday, Oct. 16. This is his seventh lecture tour in the United States. Freyer comes to the College under the auspices of the Asso ciation of American Colleges Arts Program; the program is supported by a grant from the Danforth Foundation. Its pur pose is to assist colleges in their efforts to strengthen libe ral education. After graduating from Eng land’s Cambridge University with honors in science and Eng lish, Freyer studied languages and received his doctorate de gree from the University of Dublin. For the past sixteen years he has combined free lance writing and lecturing with farming, potting, and horse breeding. He has visited all of the re cent trouble spots in Northern Ireland and interviewed leaders on both sides. The next program in New berry College’s Artists and Lec turers Series is the Bertoncini Trio; the evening of classical and contemporary guitar music is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 28. Mrs. Taylor rites Tuesday Mrs Mamie Danzey Taylor, 86, widow of William H. Taylor, died Sunday morning at the Newberry County Memorial Ho spital. Mrs. Taylor was born in Ala bama, the daughter of the late John J. and Allie H. Danzey. She is survived by three sons, W. S. Taylor of Phenix City, Ala., and Ralph L. Taylor and L. T. Taylor, both of Columbus, Ga.; two daughters, Mrs. Annie Laura Wheeler of Columbus, Ga., and Mrs. Mary T. Bras well of Newberry; 10 grand children and 20 great-grandchil dren. Funeral services were con ducted Tuesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home with interment in Newberry Memorial Gar dens. Mrs. Cromer dies Sunday Mrs. Estelle Rikard Cromer, 75, wife of the late Charlton T. Cromer, died Sunday morning at the J. F. Hawkins Nursing Home.She had been in declin ing health for several years. Bom and reared in this coun ty, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Minnie Epps Rikard. She was a member of the Newberry A. R. P. Church and a member of the Women’s Missionary Society as long as her health permitted. Surviving are one son, Leland Ralph Cromer, Newberry; four daughters, Mrs. O. R. Higgins, Newberry, Mrs. Robert M.Clary of New Ellington, Mrs. L. L. Henderson and Mrs. Jesse C. Stone, Newberry, one brother, Leland E. Rikard, Newberry; two sisters, Mrs. James Adams, Whitmire and Mrs. W. D. Crom er, Newberry; nine grandchild ren and four great-grandchild ren. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at her church with Rev. E. L. Bland conduct ing. Interment was in Rosemont Cemetery. Robin Wicker cycle victim A 15-year-old Joanna youth was killed Saturday when he apparently lost control of his motorcycle on a curve near Jo anna. Coroner George R. Summer said Robin Ray Wicker, son of Mrs. Dorothy Humphrey Wicker of Joanna and Ralph Wicker of Newberry, was thrown into a pasture after his motorcycle hit a ditch. The victim was bom in New berry County but had lived his entire life in Joanna. He was an employee of Collins & Aik- man Hosiery Mill in Clinton, and was a Baptist. Surviving in addition to his parents are three brothers, Dean, Dickie and Marty Wicker jf the home, his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Humphrey of Joanna and Olin Wicker and Mrs. Willie Padgett of New berry; and his great-grandpar ents, Mrs. Mary Ann Roland of Joanna and Mrs. Elizabeth Wicker of Newberry. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon in Clinton.
