Newberry Indian Jim Fulton gets tackled by an unidentified Ca tawba player in the game last Saturday at Salisbury, N. C. Fulton, a junior from Black sburg, S. C., led the rushing attack for the Indians in the game for 86 yards. After leading the Catawba Indians 14-7 midway through the second quarter the Newberry squad lost the game 41-21. “Lenoir Rhyne has three of the finest backs we’ll play a- gainst this season,” commented Herren. Fullback Carl Bartles was the leading rusher in the Carolinas conference last sea son with 1,190 yards. He was number three in total offense with 1,260 yards. Teammate Mike McRee held the number one total offense slot with 1,723 yards for a 172.3 yard per game average. Junior tailback Mike Porter has improved over last year and poses a real threat to the Indians defense. Newberry will be handicap ped on their defense with in juries from linebackers Ken Pettus and Mark Davis. Pettus with a badly bruised leg and Davis with an injured shoulder. Pettus is the leading point man on defense. Coach Robertson is relying on his big front four (Marion Waters, Andy Murtiff, Buzz Brown, and Howard Mer rick) to get to the Bruin backs. Newberry’s offense has rol led up 1,044 yards total, offense against their opponents, 652 in three games. But fumbles and interceptions have taken their toll on the tribe. Freshman quarterback Tom my Williamson from Thomson, Ga. was sidelined Saturday with a hurt knee, but will probably see action Saturday night. Tailback Donald Garrick has rolled up 335 yards on the ground with Jimmy Fulton fol lowing with 215. Sophomore Chuck Beaty from Columbia is third with 169. If the Indians can keep their powerful running game, and hold on to the football, they will give Lenoir Rhyne a real tough game.
