Other standouts in the scrim mage were the passing of se nior co-captain Gary Welchel of Sumter and the receiving of Howdy Hays, Atlanta, Ga. ju nior. “Two sophomores who did an excellent job of blocking and opening holes in the line were Frank Saccomen, a transfer stu dent from the University of Youngstown in Ohio and Steve Parker of Spartanburg,” Her ren added. Key men on the defensive line were Durwood Yates. Sil ver Springs, Md. sophomore; Andy Murtiff, Rockville, Md. junior; and Mark Davis, Deca tur, Ga., sophomore. Secondary defensive men who made some key interceptions were two Georgians sophomore Butch Jemigan from Evans, and freshman Randy Pardue from Rome. “After four days of practice, Herren said, “we are very pleas ed with the progress the squad has made. We realize that a lot of work has to be done before the opening game in two weeks,” he continued, ‘but the team is in line with our progress sche dule.” J. B. Witherspoon Jr., form erly of Columbia, died Tuesday in a hospital in San Angelo, Tex. Mr. Witherspoon was born in Branchville, the son of the late J. B. Witherspoon Sr. and Car olina McKeown Witherspoon. Survivors include a sister, Mrs. J. Virgil Long of Newberry.
